Hi All Where do I buy aluminium "J "mould here in the Newcastle district. If not locally has anyone bought this stuff anywhere in NSW???. Do they make something in a similar profile ( sorta "L" shaped) in timber that can be bent around a radius without snapping? . I know they make cover moulds like quad and half round moulding but i am trying to find something to use where the walls of the TD meet the roof. All replys greatly appreciated. Reddo

Brilliant Watson... Bloody Brilliant... Why didnt i think of "The Phone Book"., How silly of me. Slap, slap across the face...oooooo do it again, do it again . Perhaps its because i am a lazy basta#d and i couldnt be bothered doin the "Yellow Pages walk". or perhaps it was because i thought someone out of the 400 decipels on this site might have already been down the j mould purchasing trail. Hang on a minute while i give myself another good kick in the b*m for not thinkin straight....ouch... aaaaahhh thats better. I have a heap of J mould off the old van which has holes every 300mm or so both on the top edge and the side. I was hoping to use new stuff and just put holes in the top edge of the mould like you see on most manufactured vans. Slap, slap, slap..... I gotta go and finish beating myself up. Oh no ....not the whip , Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Hi All Amazing what a good spanking does to clear the mind. I just thinking about what col was saying about difficulty bending his j mould.and realised that the best way to soften any non ferrous metal is to anneal it. I do it all the time with old copper head gaskets on my old bikes . it brings them back to original thickness and softens them. So why wouldnt that work on alloy. Just heat the alloy up to a dull glow and dash it in cool water. Might try it on a scrap bit of alloy first but. Hopefully it wont tarnish and allow itself to wrap around a tighter radius than when it is cold, Reddo.... smack....oooooooo. I have had enough of this ... whack....knock it off will ya.

Annealing aluminium: candle soot on the underside and then heat the ally until the soot dissappears. Bend to required shape and then let cool. It can be done in stages along the length of your ally, just make sure you have a decent pair of gloves. Do not dunk as this will immediately harden it. Be careful with your heat as it goes from solid stuff to a gooey mess on the floor in the blink of an eye( experience talking here) No orange glows with this stuff. Cheers Paul :-)

Reddo, when you find a supplier, ask them if they do the soft stuff. Makes life much easier if you can get that. They may even be able to order it in for you. Cheers Paul:-)

Hi All Thanks for the input. Hodgons caravan dismantlers and repairers. Kalaroo road , Redhead.... have alloy J mould in 4 metre lengths for around $20.00. They also have the ribbed 1" X 1" angle moulding that i see on a lot of vans for around the same money. When quizzed about just how sharp a radius this stuff could be bent the salesbloke didnt want to commit to saying that it could be bent at all. Will try a mob today called Aluminium specialtys that the salesbloke put me onto. See if they make a softer grade of aluminium. If all else fails i might practice up using Pauls instructions. Cheers Reddo

Hi Reddo , Aluminium j mould should pull around the edge of your TD . Screw it on every 250 mm as you go. If it curls out along the side gently knock it back with a rubber mallet when you have finished. Make sure to cut it to long so you have a handle for the last bit of the curve. If you use an angle mould 20mm x 10mm , 10mm should pull around ok 12-16mm is a lot harder to work with . Russell

Hi russell Thanks for your input. Is there any special grade of alloy to ask for?? I understand what your saying about the shallower side on the mould. The less width 10mm as opposed to 12-16mm the better. less to bulge out as you bend it. As i said before i have a bit of J mould... well not actually j mould its 25mm x 25mm which has been bent to suit the old van i wrecked. But they have drilled holes through the sides of the mould to screw it in against the van. Looks Sh#thouse. I would really have like to stick with timber "L" moulding but like Cobber has mentioned on another post it would be extremely difficult to pull around tight radiuses without splitting. Other alternatice id "D" mould but that wont cover the join where the wall meets the roof??? Lead would be good ... its nice and soft....easy to work to shape..... and heavy ... and ugly. Reddo
