Does anyone know the best method to clean old cushions? Mine are sprung with horse hair (I think you call it) I assume I would get an upholstery cleaner in? Cheers Kathryn

Hi kathryn These old cushions do not have an inner cover. They are either stuffed full of horse hair or what was known as "Kapock". There is a few tactics you can try. 1 is to get the cushions cleaned the same as you would your carpet. wet shampoo ,then leave for a few weeks to air out by hanging them so the air gets to all sides. they are still bound to smell like a pensioners fart. 2 is to unpick the stitching at one end and empty the contents. get new medium density sponge cut to size and then fit a zipper where you unpicked the stitching. I would only hand wash the old covers as they might not stand up to a flogging in your washing machine . 3 is get entirely new covers made out of new material of a similar pattern and then get sponges cut to suit. 4 ... as for the mattress stains ... i would rather not go there Ya gotta remember ya gunna be sleeping on your matteress . Most old Kapoch type mattresses are bloody uncomfortable by todays standards. Why dont ya lash out and by a modern mattress that you both are comfortable on .... It could mean the difference between enjoying your holidays in your van or coming home to a chiropractors appointment . Th3e down side of a good innerspring mattres is the weight. and this weight is carried behind the axle of your van if the bed is down the back of the van. Most people try and pack there vans with weight in front of the axle to reduce the risk of the van swaying. Sponge mattresses are much lighter. "What price originality ... I say" If ya fit a decent cover or doona to your new mattress in the "fun parlour" ...with a similar pattern to the old matteress most people wont even know the difference. . Reddo.... Hi Reddo The bed mattress well I wouldnt be sleeping on it! After reading your reply I have unstitched the kitchen cushions. The covers are currently soaking in a bucket of water which is very brown at the moment. I will then put the covers back on and theyll be ok to sit on. The bed mattress covers I will do the same but not sleep on it. IKEA have mattresses that arent too thick so will most likely get one from them about the same weight/thickness as the original mattress Cheers Kathryn

Kathryn, While you have the covers off your cushions check to see if the stuffing looks more like coconut fibre than horse hair On my van “Driftwood” the construction is very similar to that at ourhouse.ninemsn.com.au/ourhouse/factsheets/db/artanddesign/01/183.asp including the coconut fibre, and it’s lovely to sleep on ...stay original Are your covers a tapestry ‘look alike’ material Lay off the pensioners Reddo.. respect for your elders, OK ;D Cobber.

This is the cushion stuffing. I always referred to the fibre as Horse hair but the correct term is coconut fibre! I will eventually re cover the cushions or replace them. At the moment a good wash is what they need. Kathryn
