Gidday all. I want to fit some red and amber lights to the rear of the van. My question is: Do I drill holes directly into chassis of rear of the van or fit a piece of wood with the lights attached to the piece of wood.?. I'm not sure what others have done to their van. The lights I am thinking of using are Hilite clearance lamps. Many thanks Kevin..

Hi Kevin
With those style of lights I usually just drill a hole through the body and bolt them on ,then drill another small hole to run the wire through. But I have seen a van with the lights mounted on a small aluminium bracket so as to keep the lights at right angle on the sloping back part of the van.
Cheers. Trodler.

Hi Kevin It is impotant that the lenses of the lamps are vertical or the reflectors will be ineffective Regards, Rod

The less holes drilled in the van the smaller the chance of water finding its way inside!!!

Hi Kevin
I can’t quite figure out what lights you’re fitting and where.
Clearance lights are usually on the side of a van, they are usually fairly small and don’t have inbuilt reflectors like most tail lights do.
If you’re fitting lights at the rear and on the chassis are they for tail lights, stop lights, blinkers, or what? Is the chassis exposed at the rear or do you mean the body of the van?
Maybe a picture of the rear of your van, the lights in question and where and for what purpose might help.
