I've had an enquiry from Paul about painting the canvas on his newly acquired 1950's Henderson Trailer .........what type of paint do you use, and what prep is necessary, if any. The canvas is apparently in very good condition but needs painting.
Can some of our great technical advisors help?
Thanks
Mark

I presume you mean the waterproof layer on the roof?
We had our van painted by a house painter, who applied an Emerclad waterproof membrane then painted it in silver paint (the original colour)

Hi Mark. I have been using waterproofing agents for the past 20 years, and have found that they will work OK on a caravan roof but it is near impossible to make the waterproofing permanently stick. You will find that after a few years it will start to peel off in sheets, and they are not really designed to take a coat of enamel paint over the top, and besides that , it gives you that thick painted look on the roof. The only way that I would waterproof a roof is to use a light canvas painted on the roof as it would have been done originally. It is a process of painting a sealer on the roof and let it dry. Then using an enamel paint and a roller paint the roof and while this is still wet lay a sheet of light canvas over this. I usually use unbleeched calico in a roll the full width of the van, Trim the edges to hang over the walls about 10 mm to seal them. Cut around any roof vents etc and lay and paint the calico up them to form a seal Then paint the whole roof while this is still wet, working the paint into the calico to saturate it. When this is dry paint the roof with a couple of coats of silvasheen ( an aluminium based paint) After all that you have a watertight and original looking roof. Thanks Trodler.

Thank you Trodler and Belinda for your replies. The canvas is perfect! My van has been in a shed since 1963 and the canvas is like new. I think what I need to do is apply the silvasheen. Do I buy this from a paint shop? Who manufactures it? Paul

Hi Paul.
Welcome to the world of vintage caravans. The Silvasheen is a turpes base paint that can be purchased from a paint shop or even a hardware shop should have it. Just remember to give it a really good stir before you start ,as the aluminium settles to the bottom of the tin. and that it is very "watery" so you will need to take care to avoid it from running.
Have fun Trodler

Hi Trodler - Thank you for the info. Guess what I am doing this Long Weekend!
Hi Ray - I can send you pictures of my Henderson if you let me have your email address. Or is there a way of posting them on this site? My van is plywood in a round shape. Not too large. Very, very 50's interior in perfect condition. This is my first caravan so do not have more info than this.
Regards
Paul

Thanks Trodler!! I've just walked in from my shed where I've been using this method to cover the roof of my van. The only thing that I can add is,
1) Make sure that the calico has no fold marks or creases' in it as these won't "roll out" and as my girlfriend found it's not much fun standing on top of a ladder trying to iron these out!
2) Take the biggest swear jar and lots of gold coins with you!!! This can be a frustrating process, especially when the crease that you've just ironed out appears just after you've painted it. Our ESL (English as Second Language) neighbours learnt a whole lot of new words tonight!!
Cheers, John (Trumpet teacher by day - English teacher by night)

No need to apologise Trodler, the roof has come up realy well, only 1 little imperfection, but unless I point it out, I reckon I'll get away with it. It has been handy having the forum as info on this kinda thing is hard to find and I've no experience restoring anything, so Thankyou!
I'll post pics in the next couple of weeks, when I hope to take the van on its first outing. Cheers, John
