I am looking at getting some new Valiant Decals made up. Does anyone have a photo of one that is in better condition than this one?

www.rvstickers.com.au/VISCOUNTHere is a choice not the same, Different colours (7th R/H column) There is an an Ambassador (3 down on left column) that is closer in design but different colours. Maybe if you contact this mob they may be able to change the colours to your existing decals. ?? Rattles

Thanks Rattles. It is RV stickers that I have been in contact with and they need a better photo to work with. I have found these two on the forum. I wonder if the yellow box was always blank or if there are words missing from it?

I think you will find that Viscount Caravans of the late 60's (1966+) were called "ALUMVAN" Aliminium Frame and after that when the White cladding was introduced changed to "DUROLVAN" So the missing bit on that first picture you posted should be Alumvan assuming that it is an original decal.
However I stand to be corrected by others with greater knowledge than mine.

The first picture is from my van, which is 1965 and timber frame.

I had a 1965 Ambassador wooden frame but 40 years has dulled my memory as to the decal details, sorry I cannot be more helpful, I think you will find the Ambassador, Valiant and Viscounts had a similar Decal, but again 40 years puts a strain on my memory.

Hi Mel,
My guess - a bit more than a guess really, my hunch - is that 'Alumvan' applied to the Valiants with an aluminium frame. And so, the vans with wooden frames used the decal like yours, which looks like the bit saying 'Alumvan' has been trimmed off, or in other examples the little block which normally said 'Alumvan' was left blank. Having said that the change in colour of the cladding just below the decal on your van suggests that maybe the little rectangular block may have been there at some stage...
As you've no doubt noted from the Valiant thread in the Down History Lane section, the aluminium frame was offered as an option from 1963 on, but I'm not sure when or if it became the standard/only offering - obviously the wooden frame was still offered in 1965 when your van was built.
The decal on your van is the clearest of any I've seen, and certainly clearly shows the lion - or is it a dragon? - above the V, which is not so clear on the other examples you've posted. I'm not sure you're going to get much better than what you already have. Good to ask though.

I feel your frustration. Not many good condition examples left to get the proper metallic and colour decals reproduced from and companies that just want to make money from stickers, but do not care weather it is anything like the original one. Have a similar issue with the layered metallic Viscount duralvan mid 1960's Decal. One member has them in very good condition, but has no interest from the decal companies to make any or copy them. I am sure if they were so kind as to reproduce and give the providers a free set of decals in return for getting access to accurate originals to copy then they would be there for people to purchase. Maybe they don't think anyone will buy them. I would if it was correct and to scale.

I am guessing the same as you Don, that the yellow block was left blank and they added the words Alumvan to the aluminium framed vans. I thought it was a lion but then when I look more closely at it, it looks to have wings???
Oh to have a clearer picture!!!!

Hi Mel, I just twigged!! The animal on your Viscount/Valiant decal is a griffin. I should have dropped to it earlier - the griffin was part of my old school's crest (that was a while a go though, so it didn't come immediately to mind!). The griffin is/was also the symbol for Vauxhall cars (which is most probably why forum member and Vauxhall devotee Griffin chose that handle for himself). I'm not sure what the link between the Viscount name and the griffin is though. If we knew why Bob Hill and John Carr chose to call their company 'Viscount' we might be able to work it out. Maybe one or both of them came from Wales? (The griffin is on the Welsh flag.) Or maybe the connection is between Valiant and the griffin? Perhaps Griffin can enlighten us... Don Ricardo

Don, I just looked at some Griffin pictures and I think you are right. It looks to be a Griffin.

Just found this photo. It has a much clearer picture of the animal. It turns out that what I thought was wings is a tail.

Hello, new to posting. I have a 1964 Valiant caravan and have reproduced the logo to have printed for my van. I am a graphic designer. I can show you what I have created if anyone else is interested and wants one.

Hi Valiant63, Welcome to the forum. Looks like you’re mastering how to post on the forum. Keep at it! Most of us have been where you are now - it’s mostly a case of learn by doing. We’ll be interested to see what you’ve created in terms of the decal, and to hear and see more about your van. There are instructions on how to post photos on the forum in the ‘Forum Guidelines & Helpful Hints’ section. You’ll find the info by clicking here. You need to do it via an online photo storage website such as Flickr or PostImage. If you have any problems, yell out and one of us will assist you. Don Ricardo
