G'day Sandra That particular setup is probably from the 'Classic era' .... it's a very similar rig to the Franklin slide-on we had back in the mid 1970s shown in this tread hereA great way to travel it was, just drop the camper off and do some rough stuff in the ute. Can't say it was very aerodynamic though. Cobber.

Hi Aquamum, An answer to the question you asked a while ago... The utility camper is definitely vintage. I've posted further info in the DHL section here.

Sorry guys, That's not a Franklin Freeway slide on,it's a Freeway, which was the forerunner to the Australian Winnebago group which has now become Avida! Bruce Binns started with this model in the sixties, and went on to A,B,and C class motorhomes that we call Winnebagos today. Lots of old Freeway stuff around, just nothing to do with Franklin at the time Franklin freeway was a top of the range caravan only, with front and rear wraparound windows, holland blinds, display cupboard above the kitchen and a few other features. Hope this helps hughdeani

Hi Hughdeani,
Thanks for that info. I've been trying to sort out the Freeway stuff in my head. If anyone has been watching the forum this afternoon, the post has been appearing then disappearing as I've written and re-written it, and moved it around from thread to thread all afternoon! Yes, I know - not enough to do with my time!
At the moment the latest version of the post concerned is sitting on the DHL Franklin thread as per the link in my post above. The reason it's there is because it includes a Winser article about a Franklin built Freeway camper. So does that mean that Franklin built campers for Freeway??
If you can help me work it all out Hughdeani, I'll write it up appropriately and then put it in the right place!

Hi Don, Very confusing! The camper on the Dodge is definitely a Franklin,so obviously a deal was done with Freeway at that time! The smaller camper is a Freeway. I wonder if it was incorrect information? And strange that Franklin were making the Freeway caravan at the same time, which make me think that someone was misinformed somewhere! Cheers hughdeani

G'day again Hughdeani,
You refer to the Dodge...are you meaning the Valiant Wayfarer ute? The other vehicles are an International Harvester and a Landy, so I'm presuming your're not referring to them. But then you mention the smaller camper and I'm not sure which one you mean. Isn't that the one on the Valiant?
Sorry if I've have misread what you meant.
It is strange if Franklin produced campers for Freeway while having a Freeway caravan model at the same time. However there are plenty of examples of different manufacturers using the same name for their models, and other cases of one manufacturer using the brand name of another manufacturer as a model name. So maybe this is a case of that. Or maybe there was some sort of agreement between Franklin and the Freeway firm about the name, if the former had agreed to produce caravans for the latter.
As to someone being misinformed, we have discovered over time that there are some errors in the Winsers, mis-labelled photos, etc. However, the info about the Franklin Freeway camper is in the form of an article about Franklin's partnership with IH to produce the camper, so you wouldn't think there was much chance of getting everything totally wrong with that...?
You mention Bruce Binns starting with Freeway. Where did he start his business? Would he have been behind the Freeway Camper Company in Hornsby in the advert?
And do you think we can conclude that Freeway sourced their campers from several manufacturers, one of them being Franklin?

Hi Again Don,
Sorry,I meant the Inter ute,not the Valiants. I think it is the same Bruce Bins still around today, and yes they possibly did source vans from other manufacturers. Cheers hughdeani

Hi Hughdeani, Yep, I'm still chasing rabbits down rabbit holes! Just did a bit of googling and confirmed that Bruce Binns started his business in Hornsby. So Freeway Camper Company as advertised in Winser was his company. Great to see the whole jigsaw begin to come together. Don Ricardo

Hi all, For anyone who is interested in the discussion which has taken place on this thread, initiated by a photo of a Freeway slide-on camper posted by Aquamum... we have now established with Hughdeani's help that the Freeway Utility and Pick-up Campers and the Franklin Freeway camper were quite distinct campers produced by two quite separate companies. The fact that both campers used the Freeway name was just a coincidence (maybe... ). It took a while, but I reckon we've got it sorted now. For further information click on the following links: Freeway Utility & Pick-Up CampersFranklin Freeway camperThanks to Aquamum for getting the ball rolling, and to Hughdeani for providing invaluable information.
