Hi All Meet Marilyn The person I bought it from had painted her this awful green. I think the original colour was cream but not certain. I only bought the van yesterday and have named her Marilyn We pick her up on Saturday. Its my mothers Day present 2006 I had been looking for a vintage van in Brisbane for a little while. I cant wait to get rid of the army green and do her all up in pink. I have a 1975 yellow triumph car but the car is too young for Marilyn Cheers Kathryn PS The old girl was originally called Matilda but thats Reddos van

Hi kathryn I am dissapointed you gave in so easily without a fight . How would the world be if we wherent allowed to name our kids what we wanted to??? How many kathryns have you met in your life. No one and i mean... NO ONE ... dictates what we call our "loved Ones" no matter whether its our kids, our vans or whatever. How would we be if every car that was ever made had to have a different name....Geeeeeez mate we would be in trouble wouldnt we. If ya like "matilda"then why the bloody hell dont ya stick with it. After sayin all that i think "Marylin" is cool too. A star from the 50s, 60s and very early 70s. Every mans pinup who can forget the "breeze up the skirt" shot . Pink sounds cool .... maybe the decor and theme inside could be sorta like Wills late Elvis van..... except a heap of marylin Munroe shots and 60s album covers for wall paper........ Go for it I say. Will So you are an Elvis fan? I scanned these for you. As you can see it includes the original envelope dated 1960. I use to collect autographs years ago. I have not verified if this was done by automatic machine or is indeed Elvis's own hand writing UPDATE : Will just saw your posting re Elvis Van so sorry for you Kathryn PS Reddo Im happy with Marilyn. I can do so much more now with the theme!

Marilyn's Makeover has commenced My husband has taken a liking to Marilyn and he is helping me give her a makeover. INTERIOR 14/5/06 Left hand side Porthole. The ply was really un repairable so we stripped it off back to the outer skin. My husband will replace this section. We are doing cosmetic or repairs jobs on the interior at the moment. All pretty much in tact but dirty and some ply needs replacing in parts. The cushions are original but very dirty and stained. They are material with coconut fibre. I put pink satin coat hangers in the wardrobe and put a pink fluffy throw rug on the bed. I will replace the vinyl on the floor with black and white square pattern. Cheers Kathryn PS Will, Hope Elvis is on What the on Rove! Jailbarjuice No I wasn't a member of the fan club. I got the items about 10 years ago. Your van does look like mine

Hi kathryn
Marylin looks great. Sounds like you have great things in store for her. love the old lino etc. Looks like it might have had mechanical overide brakes at some stage of its life. depending on its weight you might have to refit them . You may have to allow a few ( hundred) dollars in your resto budget to get the brakes up and stopping again.
"Walsh Caravans" where built at the back of a caravan park which still exists on Maitland rd , Mayfield West. Old fella Walsh had a house which was directly behind the van park. he had a shed down the back yard that backed onto the van park. When i was chasing campbells lenses/lamps for our first bondwood van i called at a Motorhome place at Bennetts Green south of newie. They gave me Mr Walshs address. i went there hoping i might find the famous Mr Walsh and a bit of new old stock still down the back yard. Like most of these storytales it had a happy ending. he was still alive but not at that address. ... and no spare parts.
I think they invented the safety hitch as well. Only other van maker i am aware of that existed around Newcastle was a company named "ESROM" . These where made by the Morse family. ESROM is MORSE spelt backwards .
Keep us posted on your progress. love them portholes

Thanks Reddo for the info. I have been told also there was a fire at a caravan sales yard around 1950's in Maitland Street. Could be connected. Its interesting to learn some history about a van. This is how it now looks around the left hand side port hole. My husband will replace the old Ply that was too damaged to fix. Cheers Kathryn

This looks like a really nice project, Kathryn. I don't know if Marilyn is just a nice name, or you want to go with THE Marilyn. I can't help thinking if you carried over the white pleated theme of that famous skirt shot from The Seven Year Itch to the curtins and cushions she would be a nice piece of vintage van nostalgia. Can't wait to see the transformation from army green to pink!

Kathryn, Hi. Your van looks great.Don't worry about the work as your husbans does it he will see how good the van looks and this will prompt him to do the next job. At the start it seems like a hell of a lot of work but before you know it it will be finished. All the best . Kev.

Hi Kathryn, Welcome to the forum, look like a great project you have there. That coupling is the same as I have n my van, in fact the jockey wheel i also the same as I had also. Be VERY carful when you get a towball for it as it is not 1 7/8" but should be 2"and a 52mm is a tight fit but is what I have used. We are only a short distance from you at Waterford as is 52chevygirl. Cheers, Santa28a

Kathryn, Firstly your van looks grand. Not too big and not too small. Are you going to reuse the stuffing from the cushions. Considering the amount shown they must have been a bit on the firm side. Just one more little question what type is your triumph? Anyways enjoy your van and if you do fit it out all in pink, it will certainly stand out and get lots of comments. regards don

Hello Santa 28a We are just up the road from you. Maybe one day you can see Marilyn. BigDidda I have a 1975 Triumph yellow 2500TC automatic. Have had it since 1990 with no problems but starting to rust though. Friday 19th May 2006 INSTANT NEW DINETTE CUSHIONS I took the cushions from a spare IKEA pine couch I had and replaced the old cushions with these white ones. I will eventually dye the covers. They look better than the old stained ones but not as heavy so they do move around. Kathryn New cushions

Will & Kathryn, Speaking of JFK and singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President", here's that famous Lee Harvey Oswald shot (pun intended) tricked up from my website. Indeed you can see the band did play Happy Birthday... Why not go for the name "JFK"? Another icon statement to go with your Elvis vintage van.

Shes now registered. My husband Paul has spent many an hour underneath the van doing all the mechanical stuff. We have decided (due to time constraints) for the time being to paint over the army green using a nicer grey and pink colour. I think the colours pink and grey are a great choice for a 1950's caravan as the colours go so well together. We will eventually replace the ply that is damaged and give her a full sand back and re paint Cheers Kathryn

Hi kathryn Marilyn is lookin good. Belindas and Roberts Atlantic has similar colours. I always get a giggle when i see her and Rob arrive with Atlantic. Lotsa pink things amongst the camping gear to blend in with the van. So... why giggle??? She is the only girl/ woman in the 5 person crew. The "boys" seem contented with the colour scheme. Hot pink can be cool vintagecaravans.proboards30.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=1092624139&page=1keep those progress pix coming. Also good to see another "legend" registered and headin for the highway soon. Regards Reddo
