hi Earlee,
You've certainly done a lot of hard time consuming work on the van since I saw it a year or so back. Its enjoyeable when the whole thing seems to beall of a sudden nearing the final stages of paint & fit out.
Going to be great on the road.
This one will get more looks than Lucille does. Its a credit to your efforts.

update.. Lantern van is out of the shed and going to sydney with me for a few months where it will be hopefully finished in time for the 2012 Cowra nationals.. Its a very big 16 1/2 feet long and is now sitting on a donor steel chassis - I wasn't happy to tow with the original steel drawbar bolted through the timber floor rails, as was the original leaf spring setup. The 15 " rims now have new 8 ply light truck tyres so fingers crossed there wont be any puncture problems. The wheels are apparently from an early Ford Customline and I have been unable to source a spare with the offset that will fit in the wheel arches. Anyone got one laying around their backyard??

Good luck Earlee. The old lantern roof van is definitely a piece of australias caravanning history. Take care of it I hope your trip south to Sydney is all plain sailing. See ya at Cowra.

Hi Earlee,
That certainly looks a lot better than when I last saw it a few years back. Amazing what a hell of a lot of time & money can do.
It will be a totally unique old van , something that no one will ever duplicate, & true to its historical shape.
The newer chassis should make it travel well.
With your spare wheel problem, my Deejay is on Customline wheels, with lite truck tyres like you have . Possibly slightly different rolling diameters, but it would get you out of trouble if you had a flat. If you are going down to sydney and back before say the end of January, you are welcome to borrow my spare. I dont plan on using Deejay before end of January, but would need it then.
I'll catch up at Cowra hopefully if I dont see you before.
0266280027 gets me daytime.

Hi Earlee,
Wow doesn't time fly - it only seems like yesterday that I came for a drive with you, when you dropped the lantern van off near Dosse & Ilsa place. But that was over 2 years ago.
Glad to see that you are able to find some time to do some more work on it.
Looking forward to seeing the van, Helen and yourself at Cowra.

Thanks everyone for your interest. Thanks JBJ for the offer of the spare wheel but i took the chance and did the trip without one. Now Lantern Van is in her new residence at Curl Curl for a while but she will be outside enjoying the salt air - too bloody big to fit in the carport - must get some more paint on her! Screwed the windows shut as there are no latches yet, also taped them up to stop the rain forcing in during the wet drive.

Hi Earlee,
Great to see how far you've progressed with the Lantern Van, and that she is able to take to the road once more. She is obviously feeling quite comfortable on her new underpinnings.
The last couple of photos you posted show just what an unusual roofline the van has - quite a complex intersection of shapes.
I was pleased to see that you will be taking the Lantern Van to Cowra (I haven't misread that have I?), and am really looking forward to seeing it there.
Thinking about the Lantern Van being at Cowra made me think how fantastic it would be to set the vans up at the Nationals in order of build date - early 30's through to 1969. It would have to be approximate of course because the build date of some of the earliest vans on the forum - Lantern Van, Ol' 36, Janorma and Mark T's Landcruiser - aren't precisely known, but even so it would make a marvellous panorama. We can't do it for the 2012 Nationals for logistical reasons, but maybe we can think about it for the 2014 Nations...

I'm resurrecting a thread from the graveyard here, but during my search for info relating to earlee's Franklin van, the results led me to this thread for some reason.
Anyhoo...something for cobber to confirm or deny is this...
Back on Page 2 of this thread, in Reply #33, the second photo shows the mudguard made out of Lysaghts galv sheeting, and I think I can make out the numbers 44 under the Queen's head. If I understand your galv dating method correctly, that would mean this mudguard was made in 1944, correct?
So, what year does this make the lantern van??
cheers, Al.

WELL DONE AND THANK YOU AL ! ;D ;D.. As you would have noticed in that same post Earlee made the convenient discovery of a 1931 Sydney Morning Herald inside the wall paneling ... that was in 2007, two years before I started the Galvanised iron dating thread .... so, even though there were some doubts ... by some people .... as to the exact location Earlee found the SMH there was never any doubt that IT WAS a 1931 SMH ;D ;D Had we known then about the Galvanised dating method it would have spoilt a lot of innocent fun other people have had by "finding" newspapers that confirmed the age they wanted their caravan to be Am I wrong Al or did you yourself find a newspaper in one of your restoration projects Are you there Earlee ?..... I reckon you can now say, with your head held high, looking people straight in the face, that you have a fair dinkum 1944 vintage caravan for sale..... and why somebody who is looking for a vintage caravan doesn't buy it I don't understand Cobber

No, not me. I do remember others on the forum finding old newspaper under their lino. I can't even find old lino, let alone old newspapers under it. We should probably qualify our allocation of a year to the lantern van, just in case Detective Don Ricardo catches us out ... The date on the galvanised sheeting means the sheeting was made in 1944, so how long after it was manufactured was the mudguard made?? I guess we could be fairly safe in assuming the lantern van was made within a couple of years of the galv being made, so perhaps somewhere between 1944 and 1946. cheers, Al.
