God knows what the guy that pulled this van to bits was on. Its been brushed/sprayed with what appears to be a primer, but it has little bond to the gel coat. which has been sanded super fine. The windows have been dismantled to the basics. All of the frame components of the windows have damaged gelcoat, & all screw had to be removed with a die grinder. Having said that, I've got most of the fibreglass frame components of the windows repaired & ready to paint. Once I can refit the windows & hatch & weatherproof the van, which is being repaired in the open, I can get serious & refit the interior. i have almost all of the fittings as patterns, so nothing will be impossible to fix,

Eegads Dennis - you've got a lot of work to do before the Nationals!!! We will have our silver beastie there so if you need to know little details about which thimmyjig goes where you can get some pictures. I never ceases to amaze me how they can look the same but are all different!!! in little ways.. Cheers Deb ps will bring photocopies of the Sunliner info to the Nats. for you. ;D

I don't think you can use the term"gelcoat" on these Sunliners. I seem to think they were sprayed with a primer over the raw fibreglass moulding ( you may even find some "knifing putty" in there to hide the bad bits) and then sprayed with the top coat. The primer is bloody thick!!

humptydumpty, bloody rough is a good praising description for the workmanship on on my sunliner. But the bottom line is you can make a great van out of a sunliner, but not out of a sows ear. Jailbarjuice. I'll be at the street rod nationals in my my jailbar hotrod in green & silver metalflake, with blown windsor & 8 carbs, but alas no van this time.If any Forum members are there, introduce yourselves please. First the good news,, the primer (existing) does not tend to react with Acrylic thinners. The bad news is, I am still trying to get the old paint off (by scrapers) after 2 weeks at it!! I have found the original Sunliner sticker under the paint. Keep at it Dennis and you will make a good van of it!

humptydumpty, i found the scraper was digging into the primer too often. I started using an old Ryobi dual action sander I found on a shelf in my shed. I hadnt used it much before because I thought it was too light on old metal panels with 2 pack primer.Its certainly quicker & easier on the wrists than a scraper.It seems to work well & fast, and so far it hasnt damaged or removed much primer. As you said before, the primer on the sunliner is thick, & mine has a grey primer with lots of patches of red spot puttys. I'll look for the sticker on mine this weekend. jailbarjuice

Only the roof to go now! when the sanding is done I will move it under cover to let it dry out before applying any paint, after the windows and hatch are removed. I will probably go down to the glass and start the paint process from scratch, at least I know then what is under the top coat!!! That undercoat is pretty thick eh!! and there is plenty of that knifing putty, especially where the fibreglass joins. All I am doing inside is building a Double bed where the the divan was, rest of it is very good.

Hi guys - sounds like you are both hard at it.
gloat gloat - I am packing the Sunliner to go to the nats tomorrow.... sorry ... One question though, I sanded and sanded the drawbar on the weekend and found lovely bare metal... no numbers anywhere!!! I also went out to another sunliner and looked on their drawbar... nothing there either... We have a different chassis to Dennis, more of a boxed affair and Vicki and Colin (where i went on the weekend) have a space frame the same as Dennis's van.... where else can I look for numbers?? Ours is the same body as Dennis's but the inside looks a little different in the cupboard etc... still looking for numbers.... and yes we used the sander too... made short work of it. Deb

humptydumpty, i found a longer & different sunliner at the street rod nationals, about 18' to 20' id guess. got the same door assembly & similar mouldings to the 62-65 14' like everyone seems to have. I've emailed pix to retro to post as I cant get on top of photobucket yet. Let me know if you know about these bigger vans, & also do you have any info I can buy about early models like mine? jailbarjuice.

Dennis, The big Sunliner is a new one on me, and all other owners I know, But I must admit I was looking at a spare with hacksaw in one hand and a fibreglass kit in the other thinking a nip here and a tuck there....but the chasis. There are Olympic vans in 14,16 and 21ft configs though. I only have the written material that chevvygirl has (you probably got the same when you got your van) I hear from Reddo that you will be in Newcastle soon, might see you then.
