Hi everyone, I had an Electrolux MB16b fridge in my Stirling caravan, made in England. Trouble is, I have no idea how to light it. It has a kerosene wick underneath it. I have spoken to previous owner who says it was checked by a gas-fitter and works well. It has its own isolation gas switch.
Can anyone help with the following:
1) Do I light the wick itself with matches and then slide it in underneath along its rail? There is no Piezo ignition or other form of sparker.
2) Do I then leave the wick burning while the fridge is running?
3) I would have no show of getting a replacement wick, so does anyone know how I would go about making a new wick, and with what material?
Thanks so much in advance.
Nick.

G'day Nick I see you have the answer to your questions from our mates in the UK. We do have a thread HEREfor appliance manuals so if it's OK with you I'll copy your question and the replies you got to our thread on appliances Cobber.

Looks like I will have to just buy a new fridge and ditch this old one - it doesn't work, and no gas fitter in my local area knows anything about old fridges. It's a shame, as I really wanted to keep the old one. When I turn on the fridge, there is no smell of gas coming out and I can't see any primer button anywhere on the fridge. Back to the drawing board!

Just wanted to close the loop on this one, as I have now resolved the problem. I took it to the Gas Man in Lavington (which is a part of Albury Wodonga on the VIC/NSW border) and he was brilliant. Without any fuss he tested it, establishing that it froze water into ice and was still working fine. He removed the 'Clickson' valve which is the one that opens when the burning wick warms up the jet, releasing the gas, and installed a thermo-electric valve with a thermocouple in the flame for safety. The wick system is now gone, replaced with Piezo ignition. As an added safety measure, I have installed a discreet carbon monoxide sensor (one that meets international standards) so that I can safely run the fridge overnight on hot nights. He believes the fridge would run for weeks on end using a 9kg gas bottle.
It would be great to add The Gas Man (I can provide details) to the list of vintage caravan tradesmen, as Alan was really excellent and did not charge like a wounded bull.
