Hi Rod
Re: GIO definitive answer - some people appear to feel they have. I'm already with them for our other insurance so that's going to be my first stop. When I do that, I'll see if I can get something to share here.
As to the Lowlife that might knock stuff off - I'm perfectly ok if I'm only covered while the van is locked. More fool anyone that is leaving groovy stuff out of doors unsupervised - sadly.

Hi All
I have to say the whole thing around the insurance baffles me - in most cases the nominated value of a vintage van is less than a modern van so it seems unlikely that it is about them being stratospherically costly by comparison to insure.
And if insurance is based on risk then you would have to say that people who *love* their vans like people here do are likely to be extremely careful - and probably reasonably low risk.
Regardless, in most cases people want a nominated value. And you would think that would be good for insurance companies who don't have too many examples of rare vans to gauge value on.
Given many people are going for a moderate nominated value, insurance companies are not out of pocket by insuring us. We pay for what we want. Also, if the nominated value is low, there's little risk of high repair costs; they'll just write it off (god knows it doesn't take much to rack up a repair bill).
Why do they distinguish between old and newer vans at all - if it's good enough to be roadworthy and registerable then surely that's the end of it? If anyone does know, I hope they share.
Probably asking dumb newbie questions - Seeshell

My first thought was to ask you your colour scheme, and make you a giant tea cosy. Seriously though, what about putting on polycoat, or polyglow (I forget the name, but I have it here somewhere). Puts a protective coat on the van (I think you have to apply quite a few layers at first, then one every 6mo-1yr to keep it up). It got recommended to me for somewhat the same purpose. Not doubt someone will be able to tell you how well it works since I haven't applied it yet. Cheers Seeshell

Hi FF
Yes I did get it what you were saying in your post "We will not pay more than $500 for period accessories unless a higher amount is shown in your ceretifcate" I was just wondering how it worked or if anyone had done that specifically - which it seems some have but with another firm.
I guess if I was fitting out my van with items from the late 60s it probably would be cheaper, but I'm not - going 40s - that makes it a bit dearer.
I haven't insured yet, since she's a driveway queen. But it won't be long before I have to - and I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and details, most helpful.
Will be waiting with interest to see what response JBJ gets back.

Hi Firefighter I'll amend then and say a better training program for the young lads and lasses on the phone would be an improvement! Just from a purely self interested perspective, you would think it would be good business - you can't sell what you don't understand! Also, if there was a consistent policy, I would have thought they might have responded to JBJ by now. Who knows though - companies can be black holes - no information ever escapes! Cheers Seeshell

Hi *grin* Perhaps it's just being a real girl, but I have teapots, and creamers, canisters, tablecloths, vintage cutlery, not to mention hand appliances like juicers, hand beaters etc. They're not big, or heavy, but they are getting more expensive over the years as more people develop an interest in these things. I remember getting items for $10 years ago, but similar pieces now could be $30 or more, if you can find them. Help me out here ladies - tell me I'm not the only one who might be pushing up against that $500 limit. Cheers Seeshell

Hi All Thanks for the info Firefighter. I think many of us could be in difficulty getting support for a claim depending on how 'accessories originally installed by the manufacturer' can be interpreted. If you're lucky enough to have a complete van, then obviously there's less or no issue. For those people that renovate vans, and choose or need to make modifications or add back missing items (particularly "like but not identical" things), it would seem it's possible for them to be only partially covered. Or if recent examples around insurance payouts are any guide, it might mean they don't pay at all because it doesn't meet all conditions. Has anyone explored this particular nuance of the insurance before? Perhaps I'm being paranoid! I was also interested in the insurance for accessories mentioned in your policy (provided the van is broken into). Anyone know if this is done like home insurance, where you nominate specific items and pay an additional rider? If you "live vintage" in your van, the full set of bits and bobs definitely adds up to more than $500 - not even close to enough! Cheers Seeshell

Hi Guys Well that looks fantastic - well worth the Jurassic wait for the fabric from Florida. I certainly am impressed by your style and originality. It's going to attract a lot of attention - are you going to make some custom "lean over" pads to go with and protect your beauty from belts and zips? And windex to get all the huff and nose marks off the glass. ;D Maybe just modify a touch alarm to sound like a T-Rex. Cheers Seeshell

Hi Bubbles I don't think he's gone over the top at all - every van should have a drinks cabinet. Doesn't yours? This van is amazing looking - I love the deck. I wonder if it slid under the van whole somehow (which with this guy seems at least even odds), or if you had to piece it together once you arrived? It's certainly a "glam-pervan" - I'd be more than happy to restore it if it were ever found. What a pearler - and thanks for posting! Cheers Seeshell

Hi Fiddledidee Orange stripper is nasty stuff - no joke, it does pull skin off doesn't it? The alternative are those heat guns. I don't know what's worse - dissolving the skin off or working with scalding hot paint curls. Six of one, huh? Cheers Seeshell

Hi Fiddledidee What an amazing find you have had - almost as if Nanna herself was overseeing it. What a nice way to honour her, and keep her with you, by naming your new treasure after her. How lovely that this van is going to travel again, have adventures with a family, and have livery so perfectly matched when at home! I agree - millimeters matter, and you may have to watch the coats of paint or dismantle the carport. As you say, you're amongst like minded friends - the heart wants what the heart wants. If you're lucky enough to have the van of your dreams, lovely little kids, and a very accommodating husband who humors your obsession - like me - count your blessings. Welcome - and thank you for the story and pictures. P.S. I assume the "fiddledidee" is for the music interest, and not a love of Scarlett O'Hara: "Burn the skin off my hands with orange paint stripper, why no! I will get the servants to do it. Fiddledidee!" Warmest regards Seeshell

And that's chassis - done. Last coat of paint on the rear third late saturday (after lots of uncooperative weather). Sunday she was back on the frame and off blocks. A little disappointing that you can see only about 10mm of what was actually painted for about 25-30 man hours! Ah well, at least we know it was done properly. Measured up for the floor - will get down to ordering materials this week. Cheers Seeshell

Hi Cruisindoug
Yes I agree - I have the same on my van. See if there are any old marks on the top of the window frame where the metal window guard was previously attached - telltale holes in the ali frame, screw holes in a wood frame...
The metal window protector would have had the little "ears" on it that this slotted into and was then screwed down to tighten up and prevent flapping.

Hi Stooy My apologies - you're the SECOND person to have a family Don in a shed that we've come across in a few weeks then. The other was made known to us through member Surf Tragic - I believe the owners name is Col. How nice! The family are growing all the time! Check out the Down History Lane section of the website for more background on the Don Brand. Cheers Seehell

Welcome Stooy - With your new project, you're coming into a strong and close fraternity - and I understand you're already in contact with a few of the existing Don owners, which is a great resource. But I must say, every time I hear the brand name, I always think of the Godfather...and Don Corleone. *bad Al Pacino impression* "Don't take sides with anyone against the family. Ever." Don't worry - I understand that Don Ricardo is much less scary, and has never ordered a horse's head put in anyone's bed. ;D Welcome - we're very glad to have you here. Cheers Seeshell

Hi All Due to a mixup with my own "new old stock" kitchen latches, I've ended up with thirty (30) beautiful vintage handles/latches surplus to requirements. Attractive pieces made by Stanley Hardware in the mid-50's. They are 10.5 cm long and about 2 cm high at the highest point. Chrome with red latch button. The screw holes are on about a 7cm centre (just shy of it - imperial since they are from the USA). They are still in their original packaging, with instructions, slot head screws - everything required for installation including a selection of strikers for different situations. I'm selling the set for $200. I thought I would let people here get a look in first - if there's no takers in a couple of days I'll be posting them on Ebay. Cheers Seeshell

Hi All No exciting pictures to post - just the second coat of paint went on the lifted front of the chassis on Saturday. Sunday morning she came down in the front, got level, and then we supported the back and jacked up the towbar in front to get at the last 1/3 of the chassis for painting. One coat got put on the back section - and wait 24+ hours. Next saturday the last coat of paint will go on and then that's it - Chassis: Done. ...maybe some HTP so I don't see those new rusty bits behind the rims.... Not exciting to look at or report - but one thing off the list! Cheers Seeshell

Hi Ovalanda
That's good to know - when I started my renovation I got told they were impossible to get any longer and that I better treat the two I had like the last ones on earth! I'm glad we don't have to take that at face value - do you have links to where they can be found locally?
