Dammit!!!! I broke a window jacking up the side of the Olympic to do the floor. I must have lifted it too high. Can I get the glass replaced or do I need to source a new window?
I am currently quite pssed off.

Howdy takeiteasy I have had two broken windows in my van at different times, the last one being a stone thrown up from a passing truck straight thru the front window. I had them both replaced by glaziers, with no problems. When I did the front one, I was on my way to a VV run, and only found it when I stopped for petrol. Covered the window in thick plastic for the weekend, then rang a glazier that was on my way home, and I helped him do it. He had to cut rounded corners etc, and was all done in 45mins, 200km from home. Steve

Thanks Steve, I have calmed down a bit. I am pretty sure I broke the window by hammering in a side support. My fault entirely. I don't know why that makes me feel better.... but it does. If I am getting one replaced I might do the one with an obscenity scratched into it done as well.

Because I don't have a shutter over the front window, the glazier put 4mm glass in (was 3mm), to provide a bit more strength. The glass was a piece about 3'6" wide x 12" high, and cost about $75.00 all up from memory, which I was happy with. Steve

I forgot, here's a picture!!! I am at the glazier here, about to start pulling the window apart. If you look at the centre of the white tape cross on the left of the window, you can see a nice neat circle about 3" in diameter...that was the impact point. Steve

whilst not in keeping with the era the smartest replacement would be perspex as it is stronger and safer. On my classic millard (triple louvre) it had multiple windows broken due to the bushfire and I replaced all with perspex which I cut to size myself. Worked out way cheaper than glass ;D Pete

Perspex... interesting. I thought it would be more expensive. Doesn't it scratch easily and discolour with age Pete?
So Steve, you took your van to the glazier? It will have to wait until I can find an electrician to fit my brake controller then. Living in a small town is a pain sometimes.

We don't have a glazier in Pinnaroo. When I replaced the broken side one a few years ago, I took the window out and took it up to the Riverland to be fixed (200km round trip). I was lucky enough to find a glazier on the way home to have the front one replaced, otherwise I would have to have done the Riverland trip again. Steve

Yep, that's what I'll do. My wife, for some reason, is vehemently opposed to perspex.

Dave, she wants glass and I am not going to devote energy into chugging her mind. Do I need to take the whole window out or does the hinged it come off?

Dave, after I did some detective work I decided it was caused by me using a big hammer to make something do what it didn't want to do. Its a bit hard to explain but it wasn't the jacking... it was the whacking.

takeiteasy I replaced the windows 2 years ago and no crazing etc and the van sits in full sun. As for scratching If I wash the windows I use plenty of water so nope no scratches so far. Yes was cheaper than glass as you can cut it yourself with a handsaw and the other bonus is for the same thickness as the glass its way stronger and less likely to break when it with rocks

Thanks Pete. I would give it a try if not for some opposition from my wife. Once an idea gets in her head........
I think she must have been a rear gunner in a Lancaster in past life..... thus a hatred of perspex.

I'm with your wife "takeiteasy' as a veteran vanner spending 4.5 years caravanning around Oz in the 70's on LOTS of dirt road like the Nullarbor, Gibb river rd,Kalgoorlie to Laverton etc., etc., without so much as a cracked window even when I tipped the 22 footer on an angle of about 40 degrees after a blowout at 60 MPH. (yeah that was stupid of me). Beetles
