Trying to finish off my '50-'51 Bondwood in time for Cowra and I'm seeking some ideas on some different Spats. The existing spats whilst not original, were made sometime prior to 1976 when the van was last registered and they just don't suit. Any photos of the Spats on your van would be both welcomed and appreciated. The last photo is the new colours for the wheels, without the De Soto hub caps. Max

G'day Max, I'm of the opinion (lately arrived at ) that old wheels are good looking things..... why cover them up The treatment of the wheel arch on this model caravan I have looks pretty good I think. Don't know how it would look on a real live caravan though. Cobber.

Hi Cobber,
My thinking is along similar lines to you ... the Spats would cover up half of the white walled tyres.
Still love to see some examples though, of what others have done with their Spats.

I’m really undecided about spats ~ but I love your wheels and tyres !! I think they’d look great with a nice centre cap. Here are a couple of photos of vans I like with spats and painted spats (I hope it’s okay to use pics of other peoples vans?)

Hi Aquamum
I agree - those spats look the goods. Particularly like the first one you posted with the painted on spats...nifty!

Hi Cobber
I think the painted spats look great, on your model and the real thing, I love the look of Nomad vans which used it. I have 4 or 5 Nomad adverts showing different sizes and styles of vans but they all have the 'trademark' painted spat. Most also have the nice stylised painted flash, but a smaller one has a line like your model.

, thats assuming you can get away without spats. my old beastie has square wheel arched on one side and rounded (crescent shape) on the other. Crescent ones and square ones I'll take a better pic of the original spats, thats them on the draw bar on the next pic. Don't like them so going to redesign them.

After the nomads , JAJ stuck with painted spats on all the pathfinder models as well. Good idea really, simple and easy to do to your own preferrred style/taste/design jennison

Yeah... gotta love those spats aye.. . The one big bug bear i have found with "Bolt on "spats is... The entry door restricts the shape and size of the leading edge of the spat...unless of course you cut the spat in two and screw part of the spat to the door .. then cut a "Bevel".. Chamfered edge on both the door piece and the part that actually covers the wheel arch . That way the door can swing around without the spat restricting the full swing of the door.... Obviuosly this problem is more prevailent in small bondys etc where you only have a few inches between the leading edge of the wheel arch and the door. Not an issue on most vans over about 12 foot as they usually have around 6 inches of flat panel between the arch and the door. Shape is a personal preference.. I like the ones on Maurie and Kates Atlantic..Thye seductive .. DORIS!!! they are huge .. almost cartoon like...but suit the character of the van down to a T Also love the 2 examples that aquamum put up of Kingys van and especially that big cream and brown van..Way cool and well done Paint is the easy way out , and that way ya get to show off those bewt old rims ( not to mention ya dont have to remove the spat when ya get a flat tyre to get the wheel off ... but... if ya get the painted shape wrong and it doesnt suit the lines of the van.. well then.. ya better off not picking the paint brush up in the first place. Just my 2 Roberts worth.. Reddo

My old panel beating teacher was big on reminding us "you can only see one side of the vehicle at a time" but your different wheel arches might just be taking it a bit too far.
I like the spats but for some reason 'bigfoot' keeps coming to mind.
