Gee DR, I saw that theatre only a couple of weeks ago and thought nothing of it!!
Why is it significant? Had to google that one and can found that it was reopened by the actor Bill Hunter in 2007. It apparently is also thought to be the only tropical style theatre in southern Australia.

Re the signifigance, I'm not sure but believe the fellas who worked there in the early years found it to be a sweat box as Ouyens temp soared to 45'. Theatre was closed & then rebuilt based on cinemas in the tropics. I thought it was a nissen hut at first with war connections & wasted much time pursuing this line! When you said country vic & it's hot, i started at Mildura & worked my way down Google images came through.
Now have to find a photo that's not too obvious & not too difficult like this one! Stay tuned.

G'day Shesgotthelook and Roehm,
You both get the vanilla slice! That's the information I was looking for.
For those who are wondering what a 'cinema based on the tropics' means, it is built with lift up sides along the walls - in this case made of a trellis type structure as you can see from the photo of the interior. On very hot days the walls are lifted up to provide ventilation - just like in the tropics, or at least the tropics before aircon become de rigeur.
The theatre was built in the mid-30's and was closed in 1971, after which it was used for thirty years as a plumber's store shed. In the mid-noughties the theatre was refurbished as a community project and was re-opened in 2007 by the Australian actor Bill Hunter. I understand it was one of his last public appearances.
Over to you Shesgotthelook. Don't make it too hard... ;D ;D ;D
s'pose i should have Googled it to find out about the footy contest, i use to work for Carlton & united putting up pub signs in the 70s. Did every Carlton sign in the Riverena including all those on the tops of the pubs in West Wyalong. Maybe thats why i know nearly every pub in NSW. OK, This is a lovely old country town, has a great free camping spot by the river too.

Well done Don, it is also a fantastic spot to park your van for the night. Clean, modern facilities in the park & the lamb shanks at the pub are to die for. My little girl left her doll on the swing here & they found her for us & posted home.
It's worth a visit, here are a couple more pics to inspire people to go. Sheppo
wow!...looks like there are a few old buildings just waiting for new owners to renovate? I like that old Spanish Mission style mechanics hall. Must be a lotta mechanics in town if they need a hall like that to accomodate them all?....wonder if they have any vv mechanics in there?
;D Very good Penny, have you been there or was it a Google job?
Guilty, it was Google Images... There's a pic almost identical to yours that came up from a Pub Crawl website....
Here's my contribution... Sorry, I haven't had time to sort out Photobucket yet so I hope this works.... Sorry it took too long, the first photos I wanted to use were too big and I couldn't figure out how to resize it !! Where is it... and what's missing?
