Sorry, there were 5 not 6. Echunga, McLaren Vale, Mt Gambier, Salisbury and Port Augusta all got 1. They cost $11K each and $22K to transport!

Hi Golfview, I thought I had worked it out - thanks to the info provided by Olfarts and Crown115 which gave me the clues I needed. Thanks fellas. It was the pine trees in the background that was the final clue. OK, time to leave South Australia for a while. This is a two parter: (a) Where's this, and (b) why is it significant? Don Ricardo

OK, time to leave South Australia for a while. This is a two parter: (a) Where's this, and (b) why is it significant? Hi Golfview, Thanks for bumping this thread. Thought I'd just remind everyone what we are trying to identify. Here's a clue: The building has a connection with the tropics but is located in Victoria... Don Ricardo

Hi Dave,
Religious significance? Not that I know of, but I guess it depends on what your religious leanings are. One of the most recent times it was used was for a showing of the Melbourne Cup film. People attending were required to dress appropriately. I guess that could be a religious experience for some. ;D ;D ;D

Hi Don
You've got me stumped - I've hunted through the Victorian Historical Register...can't seem to find it.
Do you have some clues?
Cheers Seeshell

Hi Seeshell, Thanks for the post. I've been dragging the chain on this one - so much has been happening - but at least it's nice to have come up with a Where's This that has stumped everyone thus far. OK, some clues - it's a picture theatre (fairly obviously), it's in country Victoria (not Melbourne, Dave), it's in current (occasional) use, one of the most recent films to be shown there was indeed 'The Cup', it's in a place that gets pretty hot, and the reference I made to the tropics refers to the construction of the building. How's that? A few things to work on there... If no-one can get it in the next 24 hours, I'll post a pic of the outside. You should be able to Google it after that. But see how you go with the above info. Don Ricardo

Hi Shesgotthelook, You are...correct! It is indeed the Roxy Theatre in Ouyen. But...there was a second part to the puzzle: Can you tell me why it is significant? It is related to its design. And, by the way, how did you work it out that it was the Roxy? Have you been there, or was it one of the clues? Don Ricardo

Gee DR, I saw that theatre only a couple of weeks ago and thought nothing of it!!
Why is it significant? Had to google that one and can found that it was reopened by the actor Bill Hunter in 2007. It apparently is also thought to be the only tropical style theatre in southern Australia.

Re the signifigance, I'm not sure but believe the fellas who worked there in the early years found it to be a sweat box as Ouyens temp soared to 45'. Theatre was closed & then rebuilt based on cinemas in the tropics. I thought it was a nissen hut at first with war connections & wasted much time pursuing this line! When you said country vic & it's hot, i started at Mildura & worked my way down Google images came through. Now have to find a photo that's not too obvious & not too difficult like this one! Stay tuned.

G'day Shesgotthelook and Roehm, You both get the vanilla slice! That's the information I was looking for. For those who are wondering what a 'cinema based on the tropics' means, it is built with lift up sides along the walls - in this case made of a trellis type structure as you can see from the photo of the interior. On very hot days the walls are lifted up to provide ventilation - just like in the tropics, or at least the tropics before aircon become de rigeur. The theatre was built in the mid-30's and was closed in 1971, after which it was used for thirty years as a plumber's store shed. In the mid-noughties the theatre was refurbished as a community project and was re-opened in 2007 by the Australian actor Bill Hunter. I understand it was one of his last public appearances. Over to you Shesgotthelook. Don't make it too hard... ;D ;D ;D Don Ricardo

Bom Bom. That's a negative ;D But a good guess as I was considering a photo of the Opperman statue or the Anzac march past the Shamrock.
Phew, at least no-one got it first guess.

Hi Shesgotthelook,
I think you're referring to legendary Geelong AFL player Billy Brownless kicking a football 32 metres over one of the silos. The silo kick is held every October.
Not trying to usurp Sheppo though - he worked out where it was.
Not a Cats tragic are we, Shesgotthelook?

It's in a place called Mendooran, NSW. I nthink the sign is on the side of the Mural Cafe? The whole town is full of murals.
