Gawd struth.. What bloody next RVO2..R2D2s.. RSVPs... ... hysteria about what can and cant be used to get power from a van park outlet (RCD/ELCB protected...oops .. no text talk or abbreviations here ... Residual curent device / or.. Earth leakage Core Balance unit ) to your van which more than likely by now you have fitted an ELCB / RCD to anyway. Besides fitting double pole switches that break both active and neutral when you turn the switch off. More than enough to cope with any electrical short..overcurrent ... or any other delema you are likely to come across when using your van.. So.. why bother with more gadgetry in the first place?? I'll bet that if you asked any caravan park manager what all this is about 99% of em wouldnt/ couldnt give you an informed answer.. So.. who the hell is gunna come and arrest you while camping for not throwing your money at one of these new units... Thats right... no one. So... just go buy yourself a good 15amp extension lead that should be made of 3 core 2.5mm sq wire. Easily identified by the larger earth pin. Should have AS/NZ standards 3000 on it somewhere. Check it each time you roll it out ... and roll it up for cuts, nicks or signs of mechanicasl damage... If all is good... Dont lie awake waiting for the Electrical Supply Authority Nazis to come and cart ya away.. Do yourself a favour...Go buy 3 cartons with the $100 dosh.. knock the lid off a stubby and enjoy your holiday. Reddo.. Licensed electrician since 1969.. Only one near death experience with electricity.. and that was caused by a electrical inspector turning on the power to a cottage while i was changing the polarity on a power point that an apprentice had wired up back the front. .. reverse polarity Knocked me clean across the room.. and.. explains why i now have curly hair... ;D

Struth! How did this thread go off the rails so quickly?? The original question was: "THO I NEED SOM INFO ON THE POWER EXTENSION CORDS, IM WONDERING IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME TO FIND EITHER IN SOTRE [instore] OR ONLINE A CONVERTER CORD TO BE ABLE TO USE MY VAN AT HOME??" That's what the Ampfibian does! It allows you to hook up the van to the household power system via an approved device. No SMS text speak, no Electrical Supply Authority Nazis, no Caravan Park managers, no nothing. It's simply a device that converts the 15amp plug on your extension lead to a 10amp plug that you can plug into a household power socket. And it does it legally. Have we done this subject to death yet? Al.

Hi all, If you're a non-technical person like me and trying to get your head around the 10 amps vs 15 amps thing, you might find this website provides a simple to understand - and I hope, accurate - explanation of the concepts. This is not intended in any way to be a comment on the information provided about adapters and safety switches, etc. And Aimz89, thanks for asking the question you did. It resulted in some very useful and pertinent information being posted, which is relevant whether your van is a 1956 or a 1986 model. Don Ricardo

Buy a 15amp power point and a 15 Amp circuit breaker, Get it fitted to your switchboard.. Plug your 15amp van lead in to the power point. Jobs done without any wizardry You will have a designated circuit that can trip out anytime without effecting your household circuits that you have your fridge and freezer etc plugged into.

Hi Koala,
Yep, that is the device that Franklin1 suggested as a solution to Aimz89's question.
Probably a lot easier (and cheaper) for a lot of people to organise than a 15 amp outlet in their garage or whatever. Thanks for posting the link to a supplier.

gosh this is gone way and beyond, don & franklin1 thankyou for your comments an help, to those who took offence to my short cut text sorry i was in a rush an tend to short cut when i rush, but the first post refering to it kinda bothered me yes cause if i had issues understanding someone id ask alot nicer, thats just my opinion........ ANYWAY! the real an most legal choice in this matter is the ampfibian an the link provided by franklin1 is the same site i went to i spoke to one of the manufactures themself who put me onto one of his distrubuters who inturn happens to be a caravan specilist himself who has sold me a ampfibian an iv been advised that caravans prior to 1990 have in most cases no safty switch hence needing the red ampfibian (R2) this is portable an save you cost on having a outlet installed on your home....... people will always make their own choices an make their minds on who is right and wrong iv just given the information to wich i was provided by the right people in the know........

ok so having read through some more comment im bein told i dont fit in as my van is too new? ok let me just say this much please, i tried for a long time to get a sunliner but it was always either out of my budget or far too stripped an would blow my budget on restoring, now my question about the electrics is valid to all caravans........ i honestly didnt see it being a problem that id join to ask this question, im highly facinated by vintage caravans wich is what brought me here in the first place...... it just so happend tha for my first renovation i got one not as vintage as id have liked, that dont mean the passion isnt there but again my question was valid to all van of all ages an makes an modles, again i feel i have to say im sorry...................

hi aimz198
don't get too distressed about the comment that your van is 1986.
although this forum is for vans built prior to 1970 and your van is 1986, there's no reason you cannot remain a member of this forum if your interests are in vintage (pre-1970) vans.
what you will need to understand is that your 1986 van isn't appropriate for this forum.
discussing items/problems that are generic to vintage vans is acceptable and your continued interest in vintage vans and this forum may lead you to purchase one that is within the parameters of this forum.

conti my interests are very much vintage, as i mentioned earlier my budget wouldnt allow for it at this time an im slightly too keen to get stuck into fixing a van up that when i came across this 86 i decided to go for it, why not i thought, i compleatly understand the forums limmits on year but being my question was on a power topic i felt this forum could help me most seeing as the peoples knowledge here would be more expirienced. i do wish to stay so that the day i finally can afford the van i desire i canr share it with the good people here, till then ill be working on my lil 86er, but thank u for ur comment, appriciated

Hi again Aimz89, I just wanted to underline what Conti has said, and that is that you are very welcome to continue as a member of the V V forum. It is open to anyone who is interested in vintage caravans and caravanning, as well as those who actually have a vintage caravan. Hopefully being involved in the forum will help you to find the vintage caravan of your dreams. In the meantime, enjoy your 86'er! Don Ricardo
