NOTE: Caravans manufactured and/or sold under the Scenic name were also produced by three manufacturers/dealers:
- Late 50's/early 60's: M R Hamence in South Australia -click here
- 1960's through to late 80's or early 90's: Barry Nicholls (this thread)
- 1990's ownwards: Spaceline in Victoria
None of these manufacturers are connected as far as we are aware at this point.
Reading through the June 1990 edition of Caravan World magazine, there's an article about Scenic Caravans. The story says farmer Barry Nicholls founded the company about 38 years ago [which would make it 1952] and has been selling caravans under his own trading name ever since. In that period Barry has moved three times - each time buying a larger yard in Dandenong on a major highway. Soooo...Barry Nicholls...1952...Dandenong...Scenic caravans. Nothing in the DHL section. A search of the forum finds lots of "scenic" views from Daggsey travelling around Oz, but nothing about Scenic caravans. Anything in the Winser books?? cheers, Al.

But does "selling caravans under his own trading name" mean he was perhaps rebadging other brands, as per Norm Reeman and others?
In 1990, their advertisement says: "Scenic Caravans. Our reputation is from building one of the finest caravans available in Australia today. Specialists in custom building for over 30 years at no extra cost to you."

Hi Guys
No they are not something else rebranded
A company in (I believe) Epping build specifically for Scenic, have so for years.
Scenic changed hands a couple of months ago.
The same van is sold in Adelaide as the Island Star.
No one else sells them

Hi all,Scenic vans are made by Spaceland caravans in Melbourne. They are sold as Island star in SA,and Norseman in Tas.In the past Scenics were also rebadged Haciendas and Newlands caravans among others that escape my memory at present! Cheers hughdeani

Hi Franklin1, I can't find any reference to Scenic caravans in any of the copies of Winser I have access to, so it looks like Scenic will remain a mystery for the time being - at least in relation to its involvement in the caravan industry in the early and later 50's. I have seen later caravans with the Scenic label on them, but that doesn't help in relation to the earlier history. Hi all,Scenic vans are made by Spaceland caravans in Melbourne. They are sold as Island star in SA,and Norseman in Tas.In the past Scenics were also rebadged Haciendas and Newlands caravans among others that escape my memory at present! Cheers hughdeani I note Hughdeani's reference to Scenics being rebadged Hacienda and Newland vans. If memory serves me right, those brands began in the 80's. Is that correct, Hughdeani? Don Ricardo

Scenic 15 ft caravan posted for sale on the forum by Pepi on 4 February 2011: On 5 February 2011, Franklin1 posted:G'day Pepi, Have a read through the Coronet History thread, and see if you think the van in the brochure in Reply #1 is the same as yours. Click on this link. If you read further down that thread, you'll see the brochure was believed to be from 1960, so your van would be from around that same time period. cheers, Al.
On the same date Kustombruce advised that Pepi's van was almost identical to his Hawthorn van which had previously been confirmed as a Coronet-built van by Tenoroc.

On 4 February 2012, forum member Hunstman wrote about the Huntsman caravans built by his parents in Ballarat:
Mum and Dad got together yesterday and created a listing of those people that they could remember making vans for. Might be a bit incomplete but some good info came out.
Lylack - Jack and Lyla Kelly - Preston VIC Roma - 2 vans built. Phoenix - Don Chrisfield Bluebird - Mike Collins - Melbourne. Mike went on to operate Vicount Caravans in Vic. Star - Albert June - Arrarat and Mildura Lonsdale - Ian Thompson - Melbourne Classic and Scenic - Barry Nichols - Melbourne Cedar - George Backan - Melbourne Bee Keepers - 14' tandems - Maryborough VIC Private sale to a lady in Melbourne of a 23' tandem under Huntsman banner

28 ft Scenic tandem caravan advertised on Ebay, December 2011:This van has a mid-section galley and dinette, with separate bedrooms at each end. Front bedroom with two single beds: Looking from front to rear: Galley: Rear bedroom with four bunks: Looking from rear to front: As we understand it Scenic caravans were built by various manufacturers, and not by Scenic itself. Hughdeani may be able to tell us the origins of this van. Don Ricardo

On 28 February 2015, Don posted photos of the following Scenic caravan here: On 10 April 2015, 68adventurer commented:
Hi Don, The front shot of the Scenic looks very similar to our Adventurer, wonder if it could be related. Someone mentioned Rowvan here. Iain To which Don Ricardo responded on the same day:Hi 68adventurer, Your post this afternoon caused me to go back and look at the photos of the Scenic caravan posted by Don above, and also to look at the photos of your 1968 Adventurer. While there are some general similarities between your Adventurer and the Scenic, there are also a number of differences. Look for instance at the shape of the bulkhead above the front windows, where yours is completely rounded, but the one on the Scenic curves around to then be completely flat where it leads in to the windows. I'm certain that means that the Scenic is not an Adventurer. Adventurer (and Scenic) were also quite separate to Rowvan, and the Scenic does not fit the Rowvan mould. I think the Scenic was probably one of the caravans branded 'Scenic' under a badge-engineering arrangement by the Scenic caravan company in Victoria. The badge is very similar in shape, etc, but not in colour, to the Scenic badges put on Victorian Scenic caravans – see above on this thread for examples… I am hoping that someone who is more familiar with caravans from the 60's, such as Hughdeani, may be able to help us work out the origins and manufacturer of the Scenic van Don has written about.

Hi all, That Scenic was made by Newlands, nothing to do with Adventurer. Newlands have a "softer" shape than the adventurer, and a totally different interior. Hope this helps. Cheers hughdeani

Hi all, Hughdeany has let me know that Skyyline59's Scenic tandem shown in the post immediately above was built by Coronet. Always good to make these connections, especially for the caravan dealers like Scenic that sourced their vans from various manufacturers. Don Ricardo
