Hi all can anyone give us some advise. we are thinking of buying an old 50's caravan,, it needs a fair bit of attention, but not structural. All the ply seems to be intact apart from 1 ding, and there's a big skylight that I reckon will have a fair bit of rot in it I think we are going to get it but have no idea about what its worth, they are asking 2000$. Is this a fair price? Thanks Alex

Hi Alex.Welcome to the forum. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder & likewise what a prospective buyer is prepared to pay. It`s not something that`s discussed here as there`s many variables unlike vintage cars which have a more specific value. Comes down to whatever one is prepared to pay.Maybe look at what people have paid on here to give you an idea. cheers

Hi Alex,
Lots of factors in working out a fair price to pay. Can you do the work needed yourself, or will you need to pay someone to work on it.? From experience in rebuilding 3 vintage vans, I can say it will always cost you much more than you would initially think to do the repairs. Its also generally quite enjoyable doing the work yourself, once you assemble the basic tools & equipment you need.
A suggestion is that you put your general location in your profile, & maybe someone may live near you that has a bit of an idea what it could be worth.
As Gordon mentioned, the Forum policy is not to discuss actual prices & values as much as possible.
My thoughts is the price you mentioned would be more than I would be prepared to pay for a van needing more than just a light repair/makeover. Its often better to find a good van that only needs a clean up & repaint, for more money than one needing repair. Plus you get to use it sooner. As you get into using your vintage van, then your enthusiasm will let you take on the more extensive repair jobs on your next van.
Best of luck, & it is fun working on vintage vans, but more fun using them

Hi again Thanks for the replies, all good advice and appreciated. I do have my own tools as I'm a carpenter, and live nearby to you JBJ- in Byron Bay... I'm ok to take on a slow moving project.. ( have no choice actually!) I compared it to a link on the 'for sale on ebay' threads which sold for around 2000.. it looks similar in condition, but actually I haven't been able to have a thorough look at the van as it was full of stuff. I'll post some pics if we get it. Thanks again Alex

Hi Alex,
Good to hear from a local.
I just looked at a reasonable 12' ply van at Rosebank, near you. I've set a personal message to you with the details, & its there for the buying, a hell of a lot cheaper than the one you are looking at. JBJ
