We got a quote today for box cushion covers for our dinette seats and two extras for a bench seat - total of six. The quote came in at $618.00 this is with us supplying the material. I nearly fainted when I heard the price but perhaps I have an unrealistic expectation of what the price should be. Obviously we are off to get further quotes tomorrow but was just wondering about other people's experiences re cost. I really wish I had paid attention in sewing class at school now! Jenny

Hi Newjack66
I have to agree with you. I got sticker shock when we went to have new cushions made up for the seating for our dinette in the front of the van (1200mm long). We provided the new fabric, and the upholsterer provided new high density foam, vinyl piping and matching buttons. And there was no change out of $550 at the car upholsterer.
So not terribly far off the mark - as terrifying as that is!
Cheers Seeshell

G'day Jenny, It does pay to shop around.... first quote we got to do Ol' 36 was $1850... they were to supply four new high density foam beds and the material of our choice. On the way home I decided to call into another upholster...... same foam same material.... $750. He was a bloke who specialises in car upholstery, I don't know if that had something to do with it, the first bloke was a home furniture re-upholsterer. I got so excited I didn't bother getting a third quote..... maybe I should have Cobber.

Hi newjack66,
It isn't too hard to sew your own uphostery. You can rent a big sewing machine for not a lot and really it isn't hard at all.... I just got the materials from Spotlight.

Dave, I think you might be right. We didn't know anything about carpentry either and we jumped right into that with pretty ok results ( fingers crossed no ply falls off when we actually get the van on the road!). I really don't mind paying for specialist expertise but for some reason the thought of paying someone huge amounts of money to make what is really just big cushion covers is kinda physically hurting me. Perhaps I will just jump into it while I'm still outraged by the cost and before I talk myself out of it! Jenny

Hi all,
We had Vernons upholstery done nearly two and a half years ago now, and from memory it was around the $700-800 mark they supplied everything. But also in saying that we were mega fortunate to get some suburb vintage vinyl. I would also say your quote was pretty much what l would think the standard rate is, even thought when you get it it's shock. For us it was one of the mayor investments which added up the $ for our vans resto.

Hi Barbarab And a fine job of it you did of your cushions too - I wish I had the talent for the needle. My mother can sew really well, but somehow that skill skipped a generation with me. Next time I'll bring my fabric to you and pay you the $550 - you might have a good little side business going there if you want it Barb. Cheers! Seeshell

Thanks Seeshell, I had sore fingers when I finished the hand sewing of the ends. I think I'd rather paint. :-) Barbara B

Larry has got written instructions from a professional and one square cushion is done in three pieces and a zipper the length of the cushion.
He says they are really easy instructions and anyone can do it on a household machine if it is upholstery material not canvas. He is away at the moment so if anyone is interested in a copy please send a pm in about 2 weeks and we will see if we can arrange a scan of it.
Cheers Lyn

Hi, had a look around at material costs and if I could dodgy my existing cushions up myself and in the end, we got a professional to do it in Bali. Two single beds, two converted seats with long cushions which make into a double bed, in material that would have cost us 2 grand in Oz all made to measure. not saying its for everyone but we were going anyway and couldnt be happier with the work.

ohhhhh Bali. I didn't think of that! With the freezing weather here, going to Bali to get cushions made may just be the best idea I've ever heard

Hi Lyn, if you are still reading this forum, I would also appreciate a copy please. Thank you. If I don't hear anything back soon I will PM her. I recently purchased a second-hand industrial sewing machine and am going to give my mattress/cushion covers a go.
Regards,
Bob
