Thanks Geoff and Jude -
Except for very small vans (except the teeny Jellybean) most of us would be subject to these regulations - though I for one had no idea!
I appreciate you passing on the information - Seeshell

Hi Geoff,
thanks for that.
I've just spoke to him, & should have a set on Deejay before the weekend.
I wasn't aware they could be fitted to vans, & have always worried about being tail ended while turning.
For $40 posted approx, they should be good value. I can fit them on Deejays rear folding window awning, & when on site no one will know they are there.
Thanks again,
JBJ

G'day Guy's Yes maybe a good idea to get legal protection but will not protect you from the nob's that try and come inside of you when doing a left turn I drive every day in my truck with a over-length permit from qld transport with these sign"s on the rear .....makes no difference .....still need to be vigilant. dosse.

hi dennis
glad to help.
we're just going to put the "do no overtake turning vehicle" sticker on our window shade without the corner plates.

you're right about the "nobs" dosse, but with the signs you're legally in the right if they do cause an accident.
without the signs, you're in the wrong.

Hi Dosse,
I agree. I saw a new expensive car with the front squashed under the middle of a B Double on a roundabout in Ballina.
The truckie wasnt real worried, but the car owner was a tad embarrassed.
No matter what you do to try to get people to drive &/or behave properly, some fools will always think the rules are for everyone but them.
I'm with Geoff on the signs, plus a bonus is the reflective nature of them. Not that we do a lot of night towing, but anything that helps people see our vans & prevents collision must be a bonus.

100mm X 300mm That seems a bit small... The ones i see on the back of trucks seem to be a lot bigger than 100 x 300mm?? (4"X 1ft)..smaller than a number plate Leads me to think people would need to be right up the clacker of your caravan to be able to read the wording?? Even the corner signs seem to be a bit small at 175 x 175..?? But who am i to argue with the VSB 12 doc. As Dossie has already stated.. ya still need to check your mirrors when turning .. signs dont insure you against boneheads trying to slip up the inside of you while you are making a left hand turn .. on dual lanes .. roundabouts etc> Reddo

I've read through the standard, it's attached f you want it: - It's the national one, applies everywhere in Oz.
- 300mm x 100mm is a legit size for "Don't overtake"
- You must NOT fit "Don't overtake" if you're under 7.5m long (car + VV) 1
- You must fit the plate if you straddle lanes to turn.2
- The tiny plate is allowed so it can be stuck on the rear frame-member of a flatbed or prime mover. 3
- The plate must be less that 500mm from the left edge of the trailer. Centred is not OK.
- Plate also has to be between 400mm and 200mm off the ground, no higher or lower.
- The 175mm x 175mm corner plates (red/yellow square) do not seem to be a legit size.
- Corner plates seem to be optional unless you're a heavy vehicle (10 tons) even if you straddle lanes to turn.
But yeah, news to me, if you're going wide to get round left-hand turns, you need a plate or they can book you. Never seen it happen, and we've broken the rule a ton with Dad's car trailer + full-size sedan combo. 1: In "some" (undefined) jurisdictions. IE: Some states say you can't wear the plate if you're under 7.5m long. 2: Good luck if you're 7.4m long and have a shitty turning circle, you must AND must not have a " No overtaking" plate, so apparently you can't comply with the road rules in some states... 3: But there's no restriction on using it on other vehicles, even if you have room for the proper 300mm x 300mm one...
