I've just taken receipt of the 1935 " Paramount Caravan" brochure that was tactully obtained from its owner by one of our members .......thanx heaps jennison ........I owe you a bott' of red at the next Nats ;D ;D The brochure can be viewed here: vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=chat&thread=5351&page=1Several months ago, I took delivery of a 1936 Paramount caravan purchased from Adelaide......the caravan is in exceptional condition considering its 74 years of age, and unbelievably original, apart from a lino & curtain upgrade in the 1950's. Alan Little, our Perth collector of Holden FX & FJ's was travelling accross to NSW to pick up an unusual FJ station wagon he purchased on Ebay, ...and having room on his trailer,..... kindly offered to bring the Paramount caravan to WA. The Birkmyer cloth roofing cover lifted in a couple of sections on the trip accross, and will need to be reglued The caravan was transferred from Alan's trailer to my truck to back it into the Beverley shed: Unfortunately, it suffered some damage to the rear when Alan drove under a tree with low hanging branches in a parking area: It was punctured on both sides of the rear leadlight window .....incredibly missing the irreplaceble window Check out the No plate : Our resident historian "Don R" has viewed this caravan in Beverley, and was amazed at its condition & features. The Paramount caravan currently has the honour of being the oldest caravan in the Beverley shed ...............but not for long .......Brian (noblesgarage) and myself yesterday uncovered what we believe is even an older ........and possibly more interesting caravan .......stay tuned folks ;D ;D Mark

LUVERLEY addition to BEVERLEY, Mark. Another van with leadlight windows too. From what I could see, it's a similar design leadlighting to my Trail-a-home. Could you download a full pic of it at some stage???
Look forward to seeing the interior too!

G'day Mark, I should ask Jeff to find me a brochure..... I've put out feelers in England to no avail . Can you tell the people how this 1937 caravan became a 1936 caravan .....I know a bloke who would have called it a 1935 caravan after getting hold of that brochure I'd Like to see it in the flesh one day. Cobber.

Adam (kazandadam) says: ...... " so who has bragging rights then Now don't forget my number plate is 4900 " Thats not fair Adam ......... that out of the two 1930's caravans I flew from Perth to Adelaide to view in May 09, ......that YOU end up with the OLDER of the two Yours .......South Australian rego No: No 4900Mine .......South Australian rego No 6801I had no chance of seeing either No plate that weekend ....your's was backed up hard against a wall, and surrounded by farm junk, .......and mine had a caravan cover over the whole caravan ......which the owner didn't remove, .......even though I had travelled 2500 kms to see it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D anyway, speaking of bragging ;D .........I have recently found a Victorian manufactured caravan in my own backyard .......which I believe to be manufactured in 1934 or 1935 ........possibly even 1933 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Mark

I often wondered what happened to that majestic old Paramount van, it is one of a few that have stirred me about the same as a Don does Alan Little's daughter lives about 10 k's from where I live(d), her husband does pasture improvements on many farms in the North East including mine. it's a small world Anyway, glad you have it safe & sound over there. anyway, speaking of bragging ;D .........I have recently found a Victorian manufactured caravan in my own backyard .......which I believe to be manufactured in 1934 or 1935 ........possibly even 1933 ;D ;D OK Mark, I tried to resist the temptation to bite, but I couldn't...I'd be hopeless if I was a fish - I'd be on the first hook that passed by me in the reeds! Alright then, down to business: Victorian manufactured caravan...manufactured in 1934 or 1935...possibly even 1933... If it was possibly manufactured in 1933 it can't be a Don - they started in 1934... Can't be a Wolfenden - they started in 1934... Can't be a Brewer - I think they started in the mid- 30's... Hmmm, could be a Land Cruiser - they started in the early 30's... Could be a Windmill - they reportedly started in 1923... Could be a Roma - they say they started in 1928 but I haven't seen any evidence of Roma caravans prior to the late 40's... Could be a Williamson Page Murphy - they were around in 1933 but Mark said a caravan... Alright, Mark, I'll go for a Land Cruiser or a Windmill. Am I getting warm? C'mon, Mark, don't leave us in suspense for too long on this one. ;D ;D ;D Don Ricardo

newbie question (sorry!):
so a smaller licence plate number = an earlier registration, but not necessarily an older van? what year(s) did registration of vehicles become compulsory?

Yes, I figured it was different in different states (hence the bracketed 's')!
I was just wondering because it seems odd that two 1930s vans would have SA plates #4900 and #6801, while the Carapark I'm trying to track down (probably late 1950s?) had SA800. Thought that maybe this meant that the older vans had been on the road for a while before registration came in, but apparently not...? Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread, just very interested in the rego issue as Dad was told when he bought the Carapark in the early 80s that it was "the first caravan to be registered in SA" -- which I never thought sounded right, and yet I do still have the #800 plates in a box somewhere. Is it possible that registration for vehicles started in 1906, but that separate registration of things like trailers and caravans didn't come in until later?

Ohhh! So it's that one! I was reasonably warm then... I won't say a word to anyone... But, that's fantastic news. That manufacturer produced a lot of vans in the 30's, and was one of the first to advertise its wares on a regular basis in the press. They disappeared during WWII, and I don't know of any other examples of their vans. Oops, I said I wouldn't say a word... PS When do we see the pics? Don Ricardo

Thanks for the window pics Mark - they are beautiful! Best of all, they are still intact. Certainly an interesting and innovative van and a worthy addition to the museum. Ray

Hmm, not quite what I was expecting based on the previous clues... The question is do I believe what Mark is suggesting with this photo, or is it a red herring...? The photo is quite old, not a current one, so does it bear any relation to what is up Mark's sleeve? I've been led up the garden path on more than one occasion by these little snippets of information dropped along the way, so in this case is it the actual van or a decoy? Where's Cobber when I need him? Don Ricardo

G'day Don R, Sorry mate I've been doing a bit of "lurking" to see what it's like..... not much fun I think the first of your two guesses above could be on the mark...... speaking of Mark... can you believe how lucky that bloke is We know Land Cruiser in 1937 were skiting about the fact that they had been making caravans for some years..... even before the depression started so this photo the above mentioned Mark has posted could be one of them by the look of it. I suppose we will just have to wait...... and wait...... and wait Cobber.

Hi All. A possible spanner for the number plate works... At least on cars many owners in pre 50's times (and today somewhat) transferred the plate to their next car. royal 313 has a 1925 Maxwell with the plate from a previous owners T Ford. On the oldest of the 2 it seems that we "crow eaters" have to be more vigilant or we will lose more of our old vans. We do still have 1or 2 that i know of and both have been shown on this forum at the caravan and camping show. Perhaps I could interest either of you in a one of towcar from 33. (it evan has a matching tear drop from 48) I've just bought another V.C.Valiant Safari for my Globe trotter, So it'll be ... Globey on Safari soon! Beetles
