More progress (sort of). Heaps more rot the deeper we go in. Replaced some framework and 1/2 the side panels. Not so bad on the other side. Mainly just the lower sections to replace. First side rough out with filler and sealed with epoxy primer. Even though we are doing this rebuild in our panel/paint shop, we are not going to spray it but use rollers to get that old classic look. Feels like we are getting somewhere now. It's good to be putting it back together instead of ripping bits off. and then the roof ...............

Hi Dianne I really admire how you are both working your way through all the "foibles" of your own delightful old van. As we've been watching your well done reno, we were empathising right along with you! At times it can feel a bit like Grandpa's Axe - original, but with two new handles and three new heads. It's a real cracker, and the work you are doing looks top notch. Jellybean will be right for the next fifty years after all the loving work you've put in. Cheers! Seeshell

Hi John and Di, Just looking at your post tonight, i could almost smell the pain of dry rot. We started out with Vernon the same way, a part of the floor then a part of a wall, then all the wall, then all four walls, then the roof. It's coming up really well, good on you both. "Jellybean", just makes you smile doesn't it. Cheers Des and Kel

G'day Jon and Di,
Looking good, looks like Jon is mastering some new found skills. Having seen what he can do with cars and rods I'm sure Jellybean will end up better than new.
Keep the pics coming ;D ;D ;D
Cheers Bob and Jacqui

Hi Jon & Di Good to see you are replacing those nasty bits. If you have a look here at aussietankers Don 150 restoration, on page 7 he lists the products he used to seal & paint his van vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=1425&page=1Very nice job and I think it looks better than the calico on the roof. I have calico on the roof of my Rowvan but I needed it to help seal the roof because underneath the calico is caneite (not good with water). Keep up the good work. Neil & Cheryl

Here is pics where I put the calico over the roof of my Rowvan. vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=1471&page=1Not real informative but give me a call if you want to know more. By the looks of the photos of Jellybean I think that the canvas was put over the roof at a later stage, possibly as a quick and easy fix to a leaking problem. I assumed this due to the roof being painted underneath the canvas. All the best, Neil

Hi Neil & Cheryl Thanks for your comments. We found the original blue paint under the cloth on the roof, but didn't really find any bad patches of rot. The worst of the rot is just above the front window, plus the piece of ply that John removed Saturday from the back was actually a piece that they had stuck over top of the rotten one. Not sure if they used the cloth to help disguise the join, or whether it was to waterproof it??? Anyway we like it much better now that it's gone. John will be happy to see the photos of the Don with just it's painted roof, I think it looks amazing. Hopefully if we do it right it will last. I actually didn't want to remove the cloth from the roof, as I thought it gave Jellybean some character, but John hated the messy joins and patches in it, so he won and we removed it. Now for the big decision of whether to put it back on or not. I'm guessing it will be not Will keep you posted. And Des and Kel, no we haven't given anymore thought to the inside. We sorta know what we want but not sure if we have the knowledge to pull it off So I think it's best not to say too much, and just wait and see what we end up with ;D ;D ;D ;D Dianne

Hi Dianne & John, Finally had a chance to read through the whole thread re: Jellybean. What a great looking little van, i'm sure you will make some great memories when out and about with this van. Shame about all the saggy bits but that's to be expected once things reach a certain age ;D ;D ;D I have owned my 54 homemade van for over four years now and as you know it has been up in QLD for 2 years. The paint on the roof was starting to suffer in the QLD weather and the material (I presume calico) was just starting to show in places. I put putty on the relevant areas and after sanding back, have recently just finished putting 3 coats of paint on the roof. I rollered it and it has come up a treat. When I finished the 3rd coat about 6 weeks ago, I actually thought that it would need another coat. I have been too busy since then to look at it again but went to the storage shed yesterday and it has really improved with the few weeks wait. So it doesn't need another coat and I basically finished putting alot of the eyebrow moulds etc etc back on it, so another few hours work and it will be back on the road. But basically just trying to say that there is material on mine. I am only the 2nd owner and I understand from the family that the builder put the material on in 1954 and has just painted over it ever since, he has never had to replace it. Just re-painted it whenever it was needed. I started pulling mine apart as it had developed a slight leak. I discovered that was as a result of where the timber roof line (above the windows) meet the aluminium skin and the silicon had perished, so the roof itself is still good. With everything I have read on the various vans that people have worked on, and with it being kept in QLD I personally would put calico or similar back on it. But of course it is your van so it's your choice. Whatever you end up doing i'm sure it will be a great end result and just think of the fun you will have at the garage sales Di searching for items to go in it. ;D ;D All the best Di P.S. Small World - I met Andrew Charters recently and he said to say hello.

Hi guys. Finally got some gloss paint back on Jellybean today. Yaaaaay. I put 3 coats of Stone ( a Toyota creamy yellow colour ) on the outside . It looks a bit too shiny but it will settle down and weather a bit. Now we have to decide on a twotone / stripe combination using orange and dark purple. Sounds a bit wild but I think it may look classy if I get it right. Then we have to paint window frames and fit them along with eyebrows , spats, lights, etc.etc. A lot to do but as long as the outside is finished we should make it to Cunungra. The interior is still a bombsite but if it's cleaned up we can throw a mattress in so we can use it. Photos to follow shortly. Cheers John and Dianne

Hi everyone, yes I have been very slack with the photos. Jellybean has been on two outings late last year, but it is still not finished. So much to do, so little time We are waiting on an old kitchen hutch to arrive that we are going to use as the kitchen AND THEN the cool tap can go in Iris :-) John spent the weekend doing little odd jobs on the exterior of the van, and other than the two tone that is pretty much complete. Will pull my finger out and post more photos soon. Dianne

Hi all, well as promised here a couple of more recent photos of Jellybean. As Doug pointed out, we have a "large" floor plan to work with!!! Still planning the "security camera and intercom system", so we can see and hear when people are at our front door. It's just soooo far from the bedroom John has just fitted the trim on the side of the van today, in preparation for the two tone/stripe (whatever he decides to do) Unfortunately the old kitchen hutch we were given didn't work out as we had hoped, so John ended up just building the kitchen himself. As you can see from the photos, they are still in primer. Cupboard doors only went on the weekend before we took it away to Coolum. Still have to replace the benchtop, and paint, paint and more paint. Still heaps to do before Cowra, but we're getting there slowly. Oh yeah, he had to fix the door today too, cause on our way home from Coolum we went around a couple of roundabouts, and our Esky decided it wanted to get out. Going down the freeway at 110 kph we noticed the door was trying to open Had to stop and tape it up until we got home, cause it stripped the screws from the catch.
