Hi folks finally, I have joined the ranks of vvers, with the acquisition of a carapark hunter junior - from looking at carapark history thread I think it's a 1956. I'll be posting photos etc in the general section in the next few days, but it has already become an obsession!
My problem is (no doubt to be the first of many!! ;D) it arrived with 15" 5 stud fj/fx rims, but not enough tyre to read dimensions - can anyone advise the tyre dimensions required? All internet research gives a tyre size of 5.5 - not sure what that means - inches? I imagine the skinnier the better to an extent.
Hope someone can help! thanks

Hi Brock , the original tyres were 5.90x 15......I'm not sure if they are still serviced in that size so it might be an idea to call someone like Antique Tyres in W.Heidelberg to see what is avaiable. Try and get conventionals , not radial equivalents ( they tow shithouse )....you might have to settle for a light truck tyre , but that's probably a better deal for the van anyway....cheers, Col.

I agree that you should go a light truck tyre and the more common and therefor less expensive one to get from most tyre shops is a 165R15 light truck radial. Try this link to see the equivalents for the older tyres. www.turbinecar.com/tires.htmThe website above lists the 5.90x15 at 25.40 inches which converts to 645.16mm and the 165R15 stands at 649mm tall so a perfect match and one that won't break the bank. This will fit your standard FJ wheels but when you get them done have the old tyres removed, then take the rim home and sand and paint them inside then have the new tyre and tube fitted. Often old wheels have tubes and if let down for a period water can get into the rim and cause rust. Cleaning and painting the rim will help you alleviate rust problems down the track. Hope this helps. Rollydog

Thanks Col & Rollydog
Very helpful information. As I speak the rims are off being sandblasted and powdercoated in what I hope is the original iron oxide red - worst case is that they will be fire engine red!
Most immediate jobs now are to get the axle off and read Franklin1's Newcastle restoration thread re leaf springs, axles. Oh and get the wire brush to the chassis and slap on some rust proofing!
Thanks again folks
