G'day , bought myself a Woodie....Ford ,that is ....1941 to be specific.... ....had to nip up to Sydney on Wednesday to pick it up from the place it had been sitting since 1966 ,this pic is the first time it's been outside since then..... ...and here it is Thursday in Croydon.......lots of boxes on parts to investigate....Kylie has claimed all the 60's newspapers already ....in the pic below you can see the big pile of newspapers beside Kylie already ,and she was just getting started ;D ....most of the timber is in good condition, seems to be an awful lot of SLOT HEAD screws in it though.... ;D......there's a fair bit of rust on the steel parts from being a bit too close to the salt air at Helensburgh ,even though it was in an enclosed garage. Most of the panels had been paint stripped and left bare , so there's going to be some careful restoration required in that department. ....should make an ideal caravan hauler....eventually..... ;D, cheers, Col.

Hiya Cobber.....it's going to be a heap of work for me too ;D......what you can see on the outside are "T"nuts , originally they had a metal cover plate over them but most have dropped off......but everything else ,door hinges, inside window mouldings ,regulators, dovetail wedges and sockets, corner brackets and asst'd supports ,all the door trims and a lot else including about a half-mile of aluminium J mould , are all fastened with slot heads ......lucky I've got a few stored away but I'll have to get a couple more,I reckon...... ;D

Hi Col,
Good to see such a rare car found. With your normal standard of rebuild, it will end up a fantastic vehicle to look at & use. I'm pleased for you & Kris finding & getting it. The rear axle ends & centre look unusual to me. Is it a truck type diff? I've never had much exposure to 41 models, only looked at one tudor 6 cyl long ago.
Thanks for the guided tour the other day, I realised it was probably early 90's since I'd been at your place.
So look for me again sometime around 2028???

Way cool Col , and rare too like Reddo said.........woodna been too many around in Oz back in it's day, wood there I can't remember any .....how much history come with it Kingy ...jeez Kingy....you're jokes haven't got any better..... ;D ;D... There's not much specific history for it yet,but it's ex-military issue so I might be able to find out some of it's early details from a couple of guys I know who are at the War Museum in ACT. It still has it's military ID tag, so that'll help. After the war it was used for tourist transport in Qld for a time, then the gent in Helensburgh bought it in '66 and started to strip it down for resto but didn't do a great deal to it. He passed on about 15 years ago and the lady of the house said she still has some b&w photo's of it from when they first got it. Dennis, good spotting....it's on 3/4 ton pickup axles and 16"disc wheels, all heavy duty stuff....it has semi elliptic rear springs too, they look like the standard '41 rear transverse type fitted one each side....must have been terrible to ride in ....but it doesn't look like it's done big mileage , all the usual Ford telltale signs of hi-miles are absent.....might have been so horrible to drive in that it didn't get much of a workout...... ......but that can be fixed,as you know.....

I can't begin to imagine your thrill in the chase and find of this one Col.
And you get to enjoy the build along the way as well.
I look forward to seeing her progress.

Thanks Mark (and everybody else too )......that pic of the van reminds me that I've got a new pic of the van that the previous owner (a few removed) sent , showing the van in really good shape at an Early Ford V8 Club show , along with the '36 Ford towcar.......got to get Kris to scan it and stick it into good 'ol Photobucket...... Been doing a little "conservation" on the steel part of the Woodie.....there is some HEAVY rust on the cowl which was a bit of a concern , I gave it a bit of a workout with a clean'n'strip disc which bites into the rust fairly well but makes a bit of heat along the way , so it's softly softly, won't usually get it all off and it certainly didn't this time ......and then on top of that I tried a new gel based rust remover ,painted it on and wrapped it in plastic so it wouldn't dry out, left it for most of the day and then neutralised it with hot water , then gave it another polish with the c&s disc again.......this time it came up bright and shiny, even in the deepest pitted areas it's ultra clean .......also decided to test just how effective it is and how well the rust is removed by leaving it in bare metal for the last few days to see if it began to "spot up".....and it's been mega humid here this week too , so if it was going to play up , this is the right climate for it......and the good news is it is still shiny and clean. So...all I have to do is the rest of it...... ;D The removable panels will all be going for a lengthy dip in the molasses tank.....only problem was the tank has been left about half full with rotten black vintage molasses. Anyone who's ever used the process will know how foul smelling it gets......and if you whack it down the drain , then your drains stink big-time.... ....so while it was p*ssing down rain last night ,I figured it might be a good time to insert said stinky stuff into the unsuspecting drain (it's only molasses and water, nothing toxic.....so it's drain friendly....sort of.... ;D) and let the torrents of rain clean it and the smell away. Only slight complication was my patented "in tank drain cock" had expired or got the droops.......didn't work anymore, that's fer sure......so I had to bail it out with a bucket and empty it in the small drain hole , one bucket at a time..... ......a process that invariably means getting a certain amount of the fragrant mixture on one's person...... ;D.....but it worked,it's empty , the drains don't pong ,neither do I anymore and the system is ready for another big serve of molasses and water, then the front sheetmetal can go in for a lengthy dip until it's all clean and shiny again. I'll get some before and after's , might be of interest to someone else with a bit of rust to deal with.....cheers....Col

Hi Col.. Pleased to hear that the rust in the woody..... ... ummm .... ( rust in wood ...seems a contradiction of terms that doesnt it )... isnt as bad as first thought. Both the rods are show stoppers mate. A real credit to you and Kris and your car building talents ...... . The rod show will be good exposure for your business and i am sure there will be plenty of working coming your way as a direct result of having your handywork on display. Might need a few days away with the vintage vans after the show to mellow out ;D Keep the photos of the steel woody coming... I am off to a rod show today down at Catherine Hill Bay Bowlo.. Part profits and donations going to the QLD flood appeal..... . Regards Reddo

Hey Col, The rods are beautiful mate. Love m. A credit to your skills, enthusiasm and commitment. Very much looking forward to seeing the Woody coming to life. You got a Rego plate in mind for the woody? Swellwillys Thanks Swell.....did ok in the rodshow, won top roadster with the '32 which was a bit of a hoot...... ;D ...if you've never been to the Victorian Rod Show, have a look at this..... .....even if you get a bit sick of looking at a couple of hundred cars, there's always the stunning building....... ....anyway,back on track..... ....Kris got the first drive since '66 ,albeit backwards and being pushed up the drive with the Jeep..... ;D safely installed in the workshop and with all the alloy drip moulds removed , the fabric roof is the original 1941 factory fitted item, as is all the timber ,which will all clean up nicely ...... .....still working on cleaning off the surface rusted sections of the cowl.....if you compare the earlier pic of the same area as below, you can see it's getting there..... ....tried the Ford 312 on for size, it wasn't all that user friendly.....needed some slicing and dicing ,which ain't part of the plan.....so now it looks like it might be "Plan B".......I have a nice 396 Chevy that's been stashed away from an earlier project, I'll back it up with a Toploader and Jeep shifter, which will all fit nice and neat...no chop chop..... ;D All the hang on panels are percolating away in the Molasses tank ,might pull a few out over the weekend and see how they look.....but they were pretty scuzzy , so it'll probably take a fair while to get a decent result..... ...and I'm not thinking about number plates yet..... ;D...cheers.....
