What a great little Zestline! Congratulations on the find
Looks like someone took your "fins" off at some stage along with teh number plate surround, a bit of a shame but the light covers are hard to find
The interior still has many of the original features, and being such a late model it has many of the features found on the later Astronauts as well. (interestign radio conversion on the front cubby hole LOL)
If you are thinking of returning to the original fold down sofa bed? check with Neil (Brewer) on the forum, he had one out of his Carapark he was giving away and if you woudl liek to see the layout of the kitchen originally) check in with Mel (MELANCO) she has a great example of the very early model with portholes
Cheers Matt P.S. if there is anything I can help out with just yell

Thanks for your reply Matt, Offers of help are always appreciated. We were given some fins, by some friends, as well as some very perished lenses. Not sure if we will go original with the bed, but thanks for the contact details.

Hi all, Just thought it was time for a little update on Ziggy Zestlines progress. We are still aiming for the Maroochydore Mingle in May. The quality control officer taking a break, A sneak peak at the future colour scheme, The excellent craftmanship of Mr retro 64, Lionel, Note the concave cupboard ends, a feature on the ends of Carapark Zestline wardrobe and kitchen cupboard units ( well done Lionel, carpentry is not his trade!!!) So there you have it folks, today the cupboard gets some enamel paint, start re-assembling tommorow, electrician coming Wednesday and hopefully rego before the end of the week. We hope everyone had a great Easter weekend, cheers retro64

G'day everyone, Afew more pics on the progress of Ziggy zestline, his interior is pretty well complete now and last week he was roadworthy and registered the day before we towed him to Mingle in May, nothing like cutting it fine. His exterior is pretty well untouched apart from a hastily added orange stripe, still polishing, roof stripe, and eventually reproduced fins, to complete his original design. So to bring you up to date, taking a break from the re-assembly and enjoying our first morning tea in Ziggy, Enjoying the sunshine at the Mingle in May, On the technical side, we used marine carpet with a corogated texture for flooring,(we tried to keep the corrogated theme running throught he van to tie in with the original cupboard doors). We wanted to keep the old laminex splashback but being badly scorched and bowed needed something to flatten it out and cover the burn, Lionel came up with the idea of using corrogated aluminiun step tread strips. We couldnt decide where to put a sink and as we cook and wash up outside just left the lovely new benchtop as is for now. The vynil on the dinette seats is vintage, with lovely texture and patterns. The dinette curtains are sheer organza, we didn't want to close in the lovely panoramic front window views, the rear curtains are both solids and sheers and we've added a privacy curtain, put up at night between the robe and kitchen cupboards. Hope you are enjoying the journey along with us, cheers retro64

Hi Retro64 Well that sure came up a treat - you have every right to look pleased with yourselves on the tea break! I like how you have subtly kept to your theme using more than colour - ridged doors, carpet, and even the ingenious use of aluminium strip. The shades of grey and orange are bright and bold, and uncommonly attractive together. I'd sure like to know where that jacquard vinyl came from - there has to be a story in that! Great work guys - Ziggy is a very dapper fellow! Cheers Seeshell

Howdy Seeshell, Thanks for your comments on Ziggy, its always nice to hear that others appreciate the end result after the hard work The colours do work very well together, considered using black and orange but really wanted a deep charcoal with the orange so just stuck with what we originally had in mind. Grey is a particularly hard colour to accessorise though with infinate shades of grey so had some frustrating moments trying to pull it all together The orange vynil i bought was the only piece that an upholsterer had still on the roll, from the 60's or 70's, and it barely covered the tops of the seat cushions.Unfortunately he didn't have any more The entire vans interior was based round it as thats what we bought first. Amazing how much signifigance one little bit of fabric can have in the overall scheme. And... we were pretty happy sitting there enjoying our morning cuppa, with the table freshly installed, daydreaming about all the places the zestline would go with us................... daydreaming still, retro64

Whilst I appreciate the skill of the master tradesman Lionel, ..........and the interior decorating skills of Elona ( the orange & grey colour combination looks fantastic ), .......I think its the quality control officer who really deserves full credit for this project Without the quality control officer overseeing this project to ensure its done to the highest possible standard, the resto could have been ............. well....... ordinary to say the least ........but no, its first class Well done to the three of you ;D ;D ;D Mark the Quality Control Officer

Hi Mark, You got it the quality control officer was essential to the success of the resto, note he has all the appropriate equiptment at paw for a first rate job!!! Also noteworthy, he is colour co-ordinted to the van ;D ;D ;D he blends in with the cupboard doors, carpet and sheer curtains, might make him a winter coat out of scraps of left over orange vynil Seriously though thanks for your kind words, very much appreciated by us, cheers retro64

Hi Retro64 Duo, Just adding my voice to the other posts congratulating you on a great restoration job on the Zestline. Fantastic! What pleases me particularly is that you've done your magic on a Carapark aluminium van. Carapark produced many, many vans in their day, and many of their designs reflected all the characteristics of what was "cool" at the time. The Zestline with its sharp angles and fins expresses the essence of 'late 50's/early 60's' industrial and automotive design. Unfortunately, the ally Caraparks aren't seen as desirable by as many V V'ers today as they deserve (this is not meant as a criticism of any other V V'ers), at least from a design point of view...which is why I'm full of admiration for what you've done with Ziggy. A few other forum members have aluminium Caraparks too, of course. More power to each one of you! Don Ricardo
