I have the paper work, (vic roads), to register the van as a light trailer, thats the category it falls in for vans under 750kg, filled it all out, just got to make an appt with vic roads, my question is, any tips or likely issues when we get there? We have a vin 1186, but no prior rego info, have the weight, but how am I supposed to know manufactured weight?

To get the weight of your van take it to a registered weighbridge weigh the caravan on its own disconected from the tow car and get the print out, and take that with you to Vic Roads that will give them the information they need. There is normaly a fee involved for the weighbridge ( $ 15 to $ 30).

I agree with most of what Brewer has said.
I got the Clipper registered about 4 weeks ago. I had old rego papers, receipt of purchase, weighbridge ticket and lots of other stuff they were not interested in.
Regardless of weight or size ALL caravans are treated as Light Vehicles, NOT Light Trailers.
An appointment must be made for rego. I turned up at the allotted time, they checked paperwork, length and width of van and all lights. I have fitted electric brakes, they did not ask if it had brakes and did not check to see if they worked. Went inside and paid my money.
One point - they would not reuse original chassis number so allocated a new one to me. Just gave me the number and said stamp this number on when you get a chance! They assumed I had a set of number stamps I guess.
Should not be a problem, just get the right paperwork. And smile a lot!
Leigh.

Great info once again, I will go with the appt at Vic Roads and not worry about the light trailer rego (even though their web site says you can do it), and let you all know how it goes.
