Hi Greedy,
I have just come across these posts, I have to say I think you are doing a fantastic job. My great uncle made his caravans with recycled materials for most of it & I think your TD looks great..

Hi Greedy..... "....all is ready for rego later this month and i am going to add up all the bits of paper with everthing i bought for the build .." Here is a tip... DONT. ;D I have a bucket in the shed full of receipts for gear i bought when i built the Splinter Hilton TD back a few years ago. I walk past the bucket nearly every day and i still havent sat down and done a tally up.of the paperwork in there..... There was a lot of kerbside junk and swapmeet bits that went into the build... I look back with fond memorys of scratching around for bits and changing the design to suit the bits when they came to hand.... So yeah.. dont look at the reciepts... look at the finsh product. Give yaself a pat on the back and a constructors certificate....be proud of what you have achieved and...... just go use the thing. Happy trails mate. Reddo

Hi Greedy,
I'm with Reddo on not adding up cost.
I dont keep receipts except for items that have warranty, where they are needed if you want to claim against a fault.
The best thing about building the way you did, is the enjoyment of being able to make something within your budget, be it high or low. When you dont have to borrow money (from the wife or elsewhere) the project is under your control.
If you can sit back & feel happy & proud with what you have achieved, you are so far in front of those that dont have the time, ability or inclination to attempt a project.
Cost is irrellevant long term. A bit like buying a feed, if you enjoy it the cost is forgotten.
Having receipts doesnt make any diffence to resale prices that I've seen for everyday stuff either.
Just keep enjoying what you are doing, & doing well
Its all fun if you want it to be
JBJ

Hi greedy,
You've done us all proud!!!!
You've managed to put together a van cheaper than it would have cost in the 50's.
There should be some sort of award for that, or at least a pat on the back, so here tis,
Well done mate!!!!
Cheers retro64

Hi Greedy53 Full credit to you - the end result looks great. And I'm utterly flabbergasted how you did it for so little - surely you got kudos from the better half for sticking to that budget! I love the look of your teardrop - but the most important thing, are you out using and enjoying it with She Who Must Be Obeyed? What do they say? "Value is remembered long after Price is forgotten." *smile* Seeshell

G'day greedy I just read your great story from start to finish, it is a most satisfying thing to re-cycle stuff like you have & end up with such a good result, you just got stuck in and did it . There's no doubt you will have more fun than most using the Teardrop I reckon. Thanks for the photos, it's been an inspiration to me to get off my rear end & get going again. ;D ;D ST

That was a fantastic read and really inspiring. I just got my 1950 Teardrop home from Victoria and was going for a rebuild. After looking at this thread Im going to try and refurbish all the bits and pieces and keeep it original. I had plans for a new steel frame and springs, wheels and hubs etc.I think Ill try and keep the original home made drop down axle. Keep it simple and keep it original. Thanks John
