Hello All
After making enquires about a van that was offered for sale here on the forum by "Kaylene" here in Newcastle, i ventured over to her mums place at North Lambton yesterday for a look.
Everyone knows i have a sort of soft spot for timber.. even if the timber is soft.
I arrived at kays mums place at the same time as Kay and her daughter(??)
Her mums place is one of those well kept old suburban houses in a quiet little street and when i pulled up out the front the lack of a "driveway"sort of had me guessing how a van could be nestled in the backyard.
The answer was obvious.. a back laneway.
We headed around the backyard where i was confronted with a large concrete and brick "pond"with freshwater running through it??
Closer inspection revealed several large Kauri Carp surviving in it
Turns out that the house is built on the edge of a permanent under ground spring that wells up from abondonded coalmine workings. The spring has never stopped running in the 50 years or more that mum and dad have lived there.. Dad grew vegies.. 365 days a year when the droughts where on..
Carp where at least 2kg each..
So.. not every home ya see is about location, location.. it can also be about "Natural Inclusions" if push come to shove .. this household could survive when others would go thirsty and hungry
Anyway .. back to the van
Here is where it currently resides...
Front view..
Laneway view.....
and they wander why these old vans can be so hard to sniff out eh.... You could drive passed a shed like this for years and never even consider an old van could be snuggled away inside??
Kay produced a bunch of dads keys, and to her credit she found the right key to the shed first go. took a bit of jiggling to get the door open but eventually we managed to gain access to her dads
"hideaway"
The door creaked open and here is the view from the door.................................Spot the caravan!!
A real blokes shed.... the sort of place only us blokes can appreciate ;D
Corragated iron .. leaking roof.. and full of years and years of collecting blokey sorts of treasure..
More shots of the van..
The front
Hydraulic brakes .. with master cyl siezed on solid.
The wheels..
Austin A40 me thinks..also siezed solid
The rear..
No brake / Tailights that i could see.. Just 2 blinkers.. with wiring running externally to them
The interior...
Kay admits dad wasnt an expert carpenter and the van was bought as an empty shell. Dad fitted it out as övernight accomodation"which meant sleeping arrangements and a cooker... no fridge .. everything fashioned from solid hardwood etc..
So.. thats it.. as is.. where is..
As always i respect the owners memories of the goodtimes that they have had away in this van with mum and dad.
There is a lot of period odds and sods in the van that are caravan and camping/Caravanning related and i have asked that Kay and the family take their time and go through these items.
Save what gives them the fondest memories of thier time away camping vanning with mum and dad.
The rest will be gladly accepted and put to good use , used and displayed once the van is back on the road again
Just like to thank Kay and the family for allowing me to take these photos. I am sure it has bought a few smiles to some of us here on the forum.
Keep and eye on this thread for updates of the rescue mission Monday week.
