Hi All,
(I,ve transferred this post to this thread from the Millmerran thread)
OK after we left the others at Bonshaw, we went back to Texas for an amenities break. Then back to Yetman, where we run into a couple of friends starting their round Australia trip[ from Tweed Heads]
Continued up to Goondiwindi for fuel & smoko. Run into same couple in a coffee shop. Funny thing. We've never been to Goondiwindi before last years Retirees Tour. Been there 3 times now in 9 months.
Set off for Moree. We found a nice caravan park with thermal springs , & stayed for three days. Camped next another hotrodder from Tweed Heads we've known for 30 odd years.
We took a bus tour to Lightning Ridge. Stopped at Collarenabri on way out & back. Its a shame to see inland towns dying fast.
Collarenabri main street
Collarenabri post office
Lightning Ridge was a lot like we expected, but certainly worth the visit. we toured around, visited most of the normal tourist stuff, went to 2 mines, and generally behaved as tourists.
Entry to town
Inside a tourist spot, that supposedly has the worlds greatest collection of lamps
This "monument" has been built from 20 litre drums, & the guy suposedly fell to his death while working on it. his friends finished it.
This is typical landscape in the mining area. Junk & mine tailings everywhere
Lightning Ridge PO
Opal Cave. Very commercial venture. I think this is where Daggsey did a few touch ups on signs.
Typical roof supporting structure underground. Exactly the same system used in coal mining in the mines I've worked at.
Great trip except the bus was made for narrow short passengers, unlike me. 3 hours each way was a long trip.
By this time my hot rod had decided to do its normal trick & be unco operative. Both my thermo fans had died, & it was boiling at low speed & in traffic.
So we decided to cut our trip home, So came back thru Inverell. Looked at the Transportation Museum. Well worth a visit. Then on thru Glen Innes , & down the Gibraltar Range to Grafton where we stopped overnight.
Looking out halfway down Gibraltar Range.
Cruised up to home, but looked around MacLean for an Adelma van Sutcac photographed a while back. Couldn't find it, but the sugar cane has grown & blocked vision.
Maybe later.
All in all we travelled around 1900 kilometres, at an average of around just under 4 km per litre.
It was a great trip, a lot of it spent with good friends in great old vans.
Better than sitting at home Reggie
