Just a quick question. Has any one ever seen any fancy ways people have attached their number plates to the rear of the van like with a recessed section or a nice chrome surround fitting of that vans era? I'd assume most caravan's made in the 40's, 50's didn't require rego?
cheers elliot

Hi Elliot. Check some of our members pics or vintage car pics for ideas. 'Butler' makes a very nice round fitting.Bit exy if you can score one.But there are plenty of other vin car light fittings out there. Google 'vintage tail lights' (images) for a wide & varied selection.cheers gordon

In Victoria separate caravan rego was only introduced in the mid-60's. Prior to that you were required to display the tow vehicle's rego number at the back of your van. Many vans had a board attached to the RHS rear of the van with the car's rego number painted on it like this one from a mid-50's Don: The light on the board tripled as a tail light, stop light and number plate light. Once it was required for vans to have tail/stop lights on both the right and left hand sides at the rear, the number plate often migrated to the middle of the rear and some manufacturers put the number plates on an oval board or something similar. Sunliners were an example of that. Things didn't get much fancier than that in the V V era I don't think, or at least not that I can think of at the moment. A few people who have rebuilt or modified their vans have incorporated a recess for the rego plate. And of course if you are building something from scratch like you are, you can do anything you please! Don Ricardo
