G'Day Guys, Curtis here again. Dad has finally sorted out photobucket and so I can now tell you about my New Year's holiday. Something about damn folders or sub folders anyway here we go. New Years eve we had booked for Phillip Island. Mum and Dad have 3 daughters and they each brought a friend so 8 of us set off in 38 degree heat. As there were so many of us we had to travel in 2 cars so here is a photo of me from the car following. Does my butt look fat in this photo?? It is 7 feet wide!! We arrived OK, but quite hot, found our 2 sites and started to set up. There were 3 daughters, 3 friends, Mum and Dad. He said he wasn't sure about so many women and just him, but I think he was OK with it.... So to setting up - we had 2 tents, a dining fly, Me and my annex. Everyone had to set up their own stuff - or sleep outside. Power to the girls, they did very well. (That's me in the back ground ;D ;D ;D) It was a bit squashy as the sites were very small, but we managed to fit in. Lucky for us they let us park one car in the carpark and not on our site!! Once we were all set up it was time for some dinner! So New Years Eve always has fireworks, and this was no different! Even I got into the spirit of the night!! Over the 4 days we were the we saw a lot of beaches...... Went to a carnival..... Watched the feeding of only one Pelican at San Remo. Watched the feeding of the Sting Rays once the Pelican was full. Even patted a Sting Ray All in all Mum, Dad and I had a really great time!! Next trip is to Torquay for Australia day and then maybe Daylesford again for Labour Day in March. How about it Firefighter?? Bye for now Curtis.

Hi Curtis, You take some pretty good photos for a caravan, I have to say! We've been giving our van photography lessons but to no avail. It just can't get the hang of the digital thing. It keeps wanting to use the annexe as a hood for a camera on a tripod like the olden days photographers! Anyway, some great photos showing a family thoroughly enjoying some simple pleasures together. We spent something like 24 or 25 summers in our van at Phillip Island with our three boys, including New Year's Eve down near the pier watching the fireworks, so the pics triggered lots of nostalgia for us, and I'm sure for lots of others on the forum. Thanks for sharing. Don Ricardo

I must say curtis you are taking very good care of your new friends aren't you,the weather at the Island seems to have been a whole lot better than that other place you visited and I hope that you weren't frightened by all the fireworks.

Hi Firefighter, No I am not that way inclined - we older vans are a straight as the day is long. I had no idea about the Festival on Labour Day week end, Mum and Dad would be horrified if they knew what I had suggested! Is this the reason you no longer live in Daylesford?? Let me know when you are thinking of booking and we will try and make it. Mum and Dad have twins in year 12 this year and so depends a bit on what they are up to. Aside to Humyboy - thankfully the fireworks were a little way off. A few of the larger ones did may my windows and hatch rattle a bit - but I am OK now. Thanks for asking!!

Hi All, Curtis here again. I have just today arrived home form the Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park, where Mum, Dad, the 3 girls and I had a great long Australia Day week end. The caravan park is quite near and dear to my heart as I was living in Torquay when Mum and Dad picked me up and took me home just about a year ago, so it was sorta like a home coming really. The caravan park is huge, and there are soooooo many sites, mostly annual. There are also some of my lost relatives there!! I got Mum to take a fewphotos for you to look at: I didn't know that Olympic vans came as a tandem - I guess I learned something too..... While we were there we saw a most amazing sunset.... Celebrated Australia Day - I am proud to be an Aussie Van!! Mum and Dad even put my pretty lights on!!

OK Guys Dad has loaded some more photos on photbucket so here is a bit more of our holiday..... As I said we were at Torquay for Australia Day. THere was this big world record attempt of some sort that involved about 1300 crazy people all floating on giant inflatable thongs - the type you wear on your feet..... Dad and Jen had a go. Mum came and watched - she was taking some photos for me - Kath took this one!! We saw an amazing sand castle - Mum chatted to the builder for quite some time. Everyone is so friendly at the beach. That is the builder lying down taking a rest!! Dad and Steph did some boogie boarding - the water must have been cold. I am glad I didn't have a go!! Here is a photo of the three wise monkeys (Daughters) OK enough about people - here are some more photos of ME (this is a caravan forum after all, and I AM the caravan!!) Mum got me some wheel chocks to lift me up a bit. THis was pretty good as my annex fitted better and it was easy to put the stands under me - much less tickling. Also Dad put a "T" level on my draw bar with s dob of silicone. It is so much quicker to get me set up and level now and my fridge works much better. So well that Mum even took a photo of it. (Even if I do feel a bit exposed with one of my cupboards open - Mum says she should have tidied up first, but I am a boy - I don't care) Well that is it from me - night night everyone.... I think Mum and Dad want me to take them somewhere special for Labour Day week end (NOT DAYLESFORD) and they want to take their 2 dogs with them. Does anyone have any advice on travelling with pets, or suggest a good place to go?? (I think I am a full member now - I have 100 posts)

Hi All. Just joined the forum as we have purchased a 1966 12'9" Franklin Freeway (Curtis) last week end. Got him home with only a few issues. Gotta love the RACV and what they have on hand in country towns.... First inspection shows very little rot, and a few leaks from the windows. Has not been registed sinf the 80's. The old Hallstrom fridge works on 240v, yet to try the gas. Stove is in good shape as are all the cuboards etc. How many of these are still around? Will post some photos and progress as we get into it. The hope is to start using him next spring. Dave and Sue Hi I also have a franklin freeway model 1952-9. I'm wondering what color strips should it originally be.?

Hi Have just recently purchased a 1968 Franklin Freeway. Not sure of size and ATM/Tare weight etc wondering if anyone can help me out with ball park figures. I believe it would be under 750 if that is the case I wont need to have it weighed at a weigh bridge for registration. The Frame is stamped 425-8 I'm assuming from 1965-1972 the format is numbers, hyphen then one number. The one number is the year of the build being from 5 an 1965 up to 2 being 1972. There fore mine would be the 425th van built in 1968. I think my van is 12'9"i shall post a pic cheers

Hi Dacha65,
Welcome to the forum. Great to hear you’ve entered the wonderful world of vintage caravans.
Your interpretation of the serial number is exactly correct - your van was built in 1968 and was the 425th built in that year.
Sorry, I can’t help you with the weights. In the end the only reliable way to know is to take your van over a weighbridge, because it may have been altered in some way that may have affected the weight. Obviously it’s also going to be affected by how long your Freeway is. They did differ in length.
