Hi LBB You are right - it is a shame to see a good retro van be revamped into a modern version ..... If the van was in good order it would always be nice to see it as the manufacturer ment it to be in 19??.
Sadly many of the vans our members have done up were in less than pristine condition when bought. That being the case It is also very satisfying to see the results of much hard labour and $$$$ put into these vans
There has been many comments on this very subject over the years. Some only want original Others see nothing wrong with gutting and rebuilding in a modern version......
I guess to quote one of our popular members " It's your van - you do what you want with it"
At least they are saved to be used for another few decades either way.
Power to all those that take up the challenge and do up a van. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Gives us all ideas for our vans
Cheers to you all Atog

Oh dear LBB - you could have stirred the hornet's nest with that one - but always good to have a debate about these things.
I tend to agree with ATOG when he quoted a member who said, "it's you van, do what you want with it". Of course the purist restorer will disagree and we do need to be aware of retaining our caravanning history as it was in days of yore. But the upside is that people who modernise their vans still love the style etc of vintage caravans, and they are saving that van from the wreckers or worse. I even know of a Carapark that has a satellite dish on the roof and a washing line built into its side - just to please the missus!!!!!
My own Rubik's Kube is far from an original restoration, with extra cupboards, different water tank, LED lighting all around, onboard battery system, extended drawbar, not to mention a colour scheme as bright as traffic lights!!
But vintage vanning is also about people, and for me and most other vanners, that's a very important aspect - the friendships developed. So we tolerate each other's idiosyncracies and how we express our love of vintage vanning in terms of how we restore them.
You could argue that people who build hotrods from old car bodies are also desecrating cars, yet there is a huge following of that interest throughout the world.
That's my 2 bob's worth.

Yeah....it's each to their own I guess, we're all a good mob. It's better to see a VV restored non-original than to see it floating around at the speedway in a smash up derby Adam

Hi all.new member. I have a modified early holden and my caravan(pixie)is a stocker. It is getting harder to find original parts and i am an"each to their own"person.I am in a car club also(ex-president)and basically,i dont care what people do to their property,as long as they use it and enjoy it.the main thing is to have fun & meet new people with same interests!!!

I am a hotrodder and have no problem with customised cars, but I like to see VV's left original as possible I also say to each his own.

I think I'm going about half way to modernizing my Valiant, I'm using new ply panels on the inside(originally the van had plain panels, and then painted, have not seen it done that way before on a factory caravan). but I'm keeping the original lay-out, with original fittings, like the stove and fridge(even tho' my van appears to have never had a electric fridge - no vents besides a very small one, and no power point, maybe a ice box or a gas only fridge?), but the general lay-out is going to be the same. Its like my car, it has new re-trimmed seat covers, but over the original seats....so the materials are new, but the "style" is much the same.

I deleted my post!. I didn't intend to offend anyone. I can happily agree that it is each to their own.
