Thats one mean ute alright Did they make Sandmans for a few years? In the building gang I worked with in Gympie, the Boss's son had one, it was a very distinct vehicle, (they made sure of that) and he had it a while before I left in Aug '71. Surf Tragic

Hi Surf T, are you sure with your 1971 date there? Sandmans definitely did not come out before HQs(1972) and as a matter of fact, to tell the truth, I am very sure that HJ (1975) was actually the first model factory optioned as a s/man. (I know a fella who can definitely answer that one so I will ask him) Another thing that makes me suss of its s/man originality is that it has an HZ (RTS-radial tuned suspension -1978) GTS dash in it. Very nice looking car though but it definitely needs the genuine GTS steering wheel to complete the picture for my money. The one on it is a standard HJ/HZ wheel. He may have told Mark its an original s/man but the more I look, I think not, just a very nice build (72 chassis,75/78 nosecone/grill, steering wheel, 76-78HX/HZ steering column (identifiable by single top tag keyhole and indicator stalk- HQ/HJ had tag top and bottom of keyhole) and 78 dashboard)............? jennison

Yeah Dave i was'nt trying to be pedantic. (we have enough of that without me adding to it!!) It was just the fact it was priced and for sale to Mark as "an original" that prompted me to pipe up. Genuine s/mans are now one of the most collectable holdens of that era. Not many around now at all as most sooner or later ended up as workhorses. I am currently negotiating on a s/man van (with log books and receipts etc still in the glovebox ) at the moment - even has factory aircon to boot!! Right now its been rotting for 12/18 months in a paddock but its still in reasonable nick!! Fortunately being a canberra region car ,rust has not yet got to it (just the sun and heat)!!! I will send poor Donr a photo if he can find time to post it for me regards

Hi Jennison I just rang the Bosses son in Qld as we do that every so often, he said he had a HQ ute about 4 years then the Sandman HJ in '75, a coppery gold colour when he visited us in Vic later, so just got the years wrong, sorry for the (my) confusion. Hope the Sandman van deal goes thru for you & we get some pics. ;D Surf Tragic
