One of my favorite VAL's a VF Regal along with R's,S's,AP5,AP6,VC,VE,VG,VH,VJ,VK,CL and CM and not to forget the Centura I have now.

Hi Ron,
Dont talk about bullet proof auto boxes & mention Borg Warner.
The Torqueflite is so much much more capable of handling real horsepower than any toy pommy motor can put out.
You have brakes for when you need to slow down.
I had about 7 (or maybe more) supposedly bulletproof Ford C4/C10 autos built by all the you beaut builders on the gold coast, northern NSW, Sydney, & they all fall apart in a heavy vehicle with a big engine & a heavy foot.
I ended spending 2 buckets of dough getting a Tremec TKO 9815 5 speed fitted to my rod, then getting it re installed properly after less than a year on a clutch & pressure plate. The you beaut expert installer everyone raved about installed the clutch badly aligned. didn't tighten the drain plug, cut my electricals, ( you name it) Then when I questioned Warranty, his statement was its your driving.
So I got my local tradesman to realign everything, & spent another $4k fixing it. New clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, Totally different car to drive set up right. I,ve now had several years untroubled successfully, but I also dropped my 9" ratio to 4:11 with 31" tall tyres at the time of the fix up.
Bottom line is nothing is unbreakable, & everyones conditions & driving techniques are different.
No way I'd call ANYTHING Borg Warner or Pommy strong.

JBJ ....gotta agree with that.....brakes are for braking and are also much, much cheaper than transmissions and gearboxes..... ....used to be an auto trans rebuilder back in the 70's....THE most common trans we did were Borg Warner 35's....they can break everything ...apart from the normal wear and tear on clutch plates , they often break the trans case where the reverse band servo mounts.....this happens when the car is revving fast in the mornings on choke, slip it into reverse and bang.....no go.....new case please..... .....commonly shatter the forward clutch diaphragm spring , shows up as a harsh grating or squeak on 1-2 shifts....they love to shudder in reverse , clutch slippage in the rear clutch pack from leakage past the ball check valve.....they have a delicate set of planetary gears that are prone to self destruction , both bands aren't renowned for longevity and need frequent adjustment.....and on and on it goes......they are a light duty trans that should have stayed in the 4 cyl Hillman,etc.....Never seen one in a Jag and I've had a few , most seem to have the large case Model 12 that is similar to the FMX Ford 'box , and they are fairly tough old transmissions.....cheers, Col.

Hi Ron.. First up .. welcome to the vintage van site.... You seem to be quite knowledgeable about motor vehicles. Wouldnt mind checking out your library of reference material. Let me state here that you have not upset me with your posts. But may i add ... Manuals, websites and manufacturers workshop notes can be a great source of knowledge ... I also find experience is equal to .. if not greater than anything that has ever been written in text. Sure... you will get all the "how to disassemble and re-assemble" and all the guff on what models had what motors/ gearbox combos... but what the manuals cant tell you is what goes wrong with them after x amount of miles. nor the weak points. That can only be learned by experiencing what Kaybee and JBJ have related to from lifes experiences. Not denying anything you have said is true and while i bow to your superior knowledge in regards to motor vehicles can i just say that this section of the forum is for Vintage van members to post pictures of thier towcars ( aka .. pride and joy) and tell us a little bit about them ... not to get engaged in an exchange on knowledge or pedantic indisgressions about what model had what under the bonnet... behind the motor.. or in the grill.
