Some pics & story of the mysterious little Don that turned up in Surf Tragic's posts recently .............
Mark
From Ronda:
The caravan was purchased in 1950 by my in-laws and was made by the Don Caravan Company of Oakleigh in Victoria (Serial No 539). The two berth caravan is in relatively good condition and has had only one owner. It has always been stored under cover in a shed. The front end has been more exposed than the rest. The van has travelled to Queensland from Victoria at least twice in its younger days.
It has a classic shape being rounded at the front and rear and has four small leadlight windows at front and rear and sides, with fly screens, and a folding step.
The seat at the rear folds down to make a double bed (no mattresses now) and the table attaches for meal times. The interior is painted cream (original paint) with green shades and curtains and green linoleum of the period on the floor.
Made of plywood, its outside measurements are 10ft 8 ins in length and 6 ft 5ins in width. Inside measurement is 6ft 1 ins long and 6ft 3 ins wide. Height in the centre is 6ft. With a coat of paint it would come up really good. The exterior is painted Silver (roof) and White (walls).
Internal lighting is by two lights with original shades attached to the walls.
It has a stainless steel sink (water tank needs repalcing), and a two burner stove Model No 6J (Shellite) made by the Coleman Lamp Company Ltd, Canada.
It has a solid drop axle and tyres, 550-16, which need replacing.
Refigeration is by an ice chest and there are plenty of cupboards for storage including a cool cupboard.
Barry's parents didn't take many photos. Both were taken in Queensland, the one with Barry in by himself was at Nambour in 1954 - in front of the family car which was used to tow the van. Barry is with his older brother Leigh in front of the van taken on a different trip.
