Mark T , I think your comment on the paramount VV thread in regards to referring to pre WW2 VVs as veteran caravans is a good idea or habit for us to get into. A bit like paying due respect to your seniors(no pun intended Cobber!)(sorry I lied!) There are vintage, veteran and classic cars and we already have vintage and classic caravans, so why not veterans? There were a lot of improvements in design, construction, materials and innovation after and in many respects due to the war efforts drive for technical advances which sets them apart as well. Not to mention the road conditions they may have endured in their day We don't have to do anything official or change a thing administratively, just a usefull and simple term(or site slang) to appropriately date and acknowledge a vintage van that does have something "extra" special about it.-its age, the times when it was built and the fact that it is still here for us to see and maybe touch! jennison

Good on you jennison, I get your drift and the Pre WW2 'vans do deserve an extra bit of respect because they are so rare and so different to post WW2 caravans :-J :J :-J :J ... for the reason you mentioned. Also... as you say.. it can only be an informal arrangement when applied to caravans because I think in the car world “Veteran” applies to vehicles build pre 1905.....(no caravans in Australia that meet that criteria)... “Vintage” applies to vehicles built between the wars and “Classic” I think is for vehicles built post WW2 that are 30 years old on any given day.... like now ! So …....... in reality we only have a few truly “Vintage” caravans in Australia..... but I'm with you... let's call them “Veteran” and stand to attention and salute if you see one passing by :-J :J :-J :J :-J :J . Cobber.

so a vintage caravan is now defined as a caravan built in Australia between 1st January 1940 and the 31st December 1969

Hi Guys,
There is still some debate about when Sportsman began building its first Teardrops.
My belief is that they started pre WWII. Does this mean mine, and any other early one is Veteran and all the others are Vintage? Where do we get the proof about when each individual van is built.
I am sure there are some around that were built either side of the war and are identical.
I think we should stick with what we have and leave it at that. Surely we can appreciate all the vans for what they are without having to draw lines in the sand about mine is this and yours is that.
Lets just stay with Vintage Caravans I say.
Cheers, Leigh.
By the way Cobber. In the car world generally Veteran is up to Dec 31st 1918 but some split this up into Veteran up to the end of 1904 and Edwardian from 1905 to 1918. Vintage is from Jan 1st 1919 to Dec 31st 1930 and Classic and Historic has several dates which I wont get into here.

Hi All I'll modify this posting, because I've been advised the topic was "tongue in cheek"' Didnt seem so to me, but I'll yeild on this ;D ;D ;D My original post can be read in the light of the above grovelling:- THIS IS THE SORT OF CRAP THAT CAUSES CLUBS TO GIVE EVERYONE THE S**** Why the hell do we need to define anything further. So what if your van is older or newer than mine, we dont have competitions for best of marque or any of that crap. Leave things as they are. If anyone doesnt like it as it is , let them go & join the pre 1908 Blogley Caravan Club. Just when things start going smoothly on the forum, some one starts on an elitist program. Not my style JBJ Unfortunately thats still the way I feel JBJ

Hi Cobber, I have modified my post to make it a little clearer (especially for me!) The post 1930 era gets into all sorts of bother with different periods. Just look at the comment on your link about what is a Classic. (Quality cars? ? Who is going to decide what fits in there, not me Nelly.) There is a bitter debate in a club (sorry) I am involved with which has split identical cars made in 1930 and 1931 into 2 classes for judging. Generally in Australia we follow Veteran, Vintage and Classic and Historic as the 3 vehicle classifications. I feel that Caravans split into Vintage and Classic sections is quite enough. As I said earlier I dont need fancy names and dates to argue over, I just love em all the same. Cheers to all, Leigh.
