My mate Peter who attended coledale with me last year has a neighbour who has just swapped an immaculate HD FOR A 1948 Teardrop. This fellow is, apparently, a mad "buy, swap and seller" and pete reckons that no matter what he buys, it is soon sold for something else!! I am hoping to sneak off for a peak and pics tomorrow morning while a few of mums friends take her to church, Pete is adamant that this fellow will soon be looking to sell on. It is apparently a genuine 1948, fully restored and beautifull(or a least thats wot the new owner says). I will keep all posted. jennison

G'day Jennison,
Sounds interesting and well worth checking out. I wonder if it's a commercially built TD such as a Sportsman or a home build? I'm looking forward to seeing the pics.

WELL, WELL, WELL.........Unfortunately I was unable to get there sunday BUT........... Pete did! He will send me pics tomorrow but it is registered as a 1940 SPORTSMAN, (not 1948). The original wooden drawer bar has been replaced with a steel one but pete says its beautiful!!!!!! He may even make an offer himself but he reckons the bloke is thinking around the $4500 to$5000 mark. I wouldn't know but if it is a genuine 40 it may be good value. Apparently the only extra $$$ to spend are for mattresses. regards jennison

Jennison,
a couple of things to check to see if it is pre or post war.
If the door handles are a turn type mounted at the top of the doors it will be an early (pre war) van.
If they are a push button type mounted in the middle it is late 40's or 50's.
If pre war it should also have the word Sportsman sign written above the doors, later ones had a cast badge.
Waiting for the pictures!
cheers, Leigh.

I am glad I said "registered as a 1940" VV . .I asked Pete and it apparently has the post war nameplate on it Lets see how the pics look blown up to a reasonable size. I can't focus on those mobile sized ones! regards jeff

I know this teardrop, it is an original Sportsman with the cast badges but has been modernised somewhat. It has been covered in marine vinyl and has original 17" 36 Chev wheels. I was present when it was discovered in a shed in a little town in NW Victoria and spoke to the original owners who talked about good times using the tear...............also the husband let us in on what can be achieved in a teardrop and his wife walked away with a red face. The guy that restored it does a good job but I couldn't put a value on it. I think the taillights ruin the rear end as they are modern.

As Koala has said,
it appears to be an original post war? Sportsman deluxe but has been modernised.
The kitchen has had a lot of work on it, the doors and surrounds are not original, this makes year id a little hazy as the doors have been changed but I assume the original handles/positioning have been used. If, however it had the cast badges on it originally this would date it as late 40's/50's.
Nice jigger in anybodies language, I look forward to seeing it in the flesh.
cheers, Leigh.

The Victorian number plate that is in the photo is the original one that came with it. Maybe someone can date it from that. It has also had a full new steel chassis built under it.

Hi Ken,
trailer rego did not start in Victoria until the early sixties. The first numbers were prefixed with the letter G. This means even a thirties van could not have a plate issued before the early sixties. Not much help in dating old stuff I'm afraid.
cheers, Leigh.

I went and introduced myself to the owner today, his name is Ray and he is aiming to keep it to go with his vauxhal(I think that's what it was) The spoke wheels are off an old chev apparently. He was pleased to hear I'd already posted a couple of photos and gratefull to sportsman 1 for his more accurate dating of its year of manufacture, especially since he was a 48 model himself!! Got a couple more pics to post later jennison
