Hi Jason,
If you go to the website for the RTA in your state, you should find a document you can download that has all the trailer/caravan regulations relevant to you. I'm in Vic and we have one and I was told you guys up there should too.
Cheers Chris

Hi Jason. As far as i am aware.... No you dont need reversing lights on a trailer or van. Although there is provision in the 7 pin flat plug for it. Might be wrong here?? To me a reversing beeper mounted under the rear of the van and wired to the reversing terminal on the trailer plug would make a lot more sense than say... having both indicators come on when reversing. I believe you can buy light bulbs that have a small inbuilt beeper in them but these would beep when you use your indicator... left or right. Another sensible safety feature would be the 2 van indicators flashed when the hazard lights switch was operated on the tow car ( if fitted). How many times have you had to pull to the shoulder of the road and the van may have been sticking out a bit onto the lane ?? At least with both yellow lights flashing it would give the following traffic some warning , and just maybe protect your pride and joy from a rear end shunt. Reddo... Federal minister for westerly winds and useless information ;D

Reddo,
Your right a 7 pin plug does have an extra pin that can be used for reversing lights provided that you don't use it for electric brakes or 12V power supply. Here in WA there is no requirement for reversing lights - probably because of the above competition for that last pin.
The easiest way to get reversing lights on the van - hitch it to a period tow car - many of these used the rear indicators as reverse lights as well. If things are hooked up right the rear indicators on the van should do whatever the rear indicators on the car do.
cheers
