Hi all, A friend told me about this little TD which I purchased last Sat on the way down to Blairgowrie. It's been a bit unloved for a while and will essentially need a total rebuild ... having not attempted this before I'm looking forward to the challenge. Leigh (Sportsman1) dated it at the mid 50's ... could anyone please narrow it down further. There are 2 "Safetee Minor" signs/badges, on both sides of the TD. Ooops, I can't seem to attach more than these 2 photos, will post this now and try again later. Max

Gee Max, it don't look half bad in the photo's! If you look up Safetee Trailing Units in D H L there is a 1956 advert. This van has a different Kitchen layout and the small photo (which is probably an earlier one anyway) shows what appears to be a timber window and timber cladding. As yours appears to have the original Ally cladding and windows it most probably dates from around 57 or 58. This means it would be one of the last built! Anyone have any other Safetee details to confirm or deny this? A terrific find in any case. Good luck with it. Are you going to take it to the Teardrop Nationals at Easter? cheers, Leigh.

G'day Max, I think your “Safetee” might have under gone some modifications over the years which makes it harder to date. The aluminium windows I think may have been installed later because the 1956 advertisement in DHL shows timber windows, and there is no mention of Safetee trailers in the 1957 Keith Winser manual which might mean they were either not made after 1956 or they stopped paying Keith Winser. The mud guards on your's... if they are original... would date it before the 1951advertisement in DHL. Underneath the aluminium.... is it ply or masonite ?. The link to “Safetee” in DHL is vintagecaravans.proboards30.com/index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=3169Have fun with it, it's worth preserving. Cobber.

Leigh .... which Easter were you thinking of?
Kingy .... they tell me the badges are worth having, thanks for your comments.
Cobber, thanks also for your info, it's ply underneath. The mud guards are a bit of a mystery for me as I don't know vintage cars at all. Would love to know if they were originals, is there anyway of telling?
All in all, I think it was a reasonable buy for $80.

Hi Winterwood or is it now Winteraluminium?. What a great score for only $80!! It`s a keeper.Timber rot can look or be as daunting as you want it to be. Mind you the 'wear & tear' in mine wasn`t as bad as yours (looks). So, take a deep breath, slide under it & have a captain cook. Take photos.Lots.Take measurements. Then see how it all comes apart/together. See if you can improve on it. (ie: make it easier) Same goes for the rest of the DIY. Got a few folk here who will point you in the right direction. The tips that away -->. Seriously though,it`s really worth working on. cheers gordon

Gordon, Thanks for the helpful tips. We are away for a few weeks from this weekend, however you won't need too many guesses to work out the first thing I'll be working on, upon my return!
Cheers

Hi Max. Being the first caravan i`ve ever owned, my Td did give me some grief originally. Mostly in the wood structure. Being a sheety i can make anything in steel.Built some damn fine buses thru the years. When it came to pieces of shaped/curved wood i wasn`t in the right frame of mind & besides didnt have any wood working tools.Consequently things i did on it got ripped out again. Now i`ve bought a swag of Triton stuff. So a whole new learning curve begins. So to speak.Look forward to the progress. cheers gordon

Made a quick trip down to Rye and took another look at the TD. The floor is masonite, with the internal ceiling and sides being ply. Took some more photos. Firefighter ... your comment re spare is duly noted. The good news is that the wheels on the TD are the same as those on the '56 wooden trailer. The other good news is that with a little & careful elbow grease and even more RP7, I managed to remove all 4 "safetee minor" badges. Max

Hi Max. You can still get the diamond patterned ali sheeting. So thats an easy job to reskin the door & the panel above it. Almost looks like the tree branch 'grew' into the top damaged section. Wheather you paint or buff up the ali is up to you.Tuff looking suspension doesn`t look like it`s going anywhere soon. Masonite over ply floor by the looks too. Yep, good looking lil td. cheers gordon
