Davo, why don't we get a petition going ASAP & send it to the appropriate people objecting the demise of the Furness?
I mean where you live isn't exactly a huge place so there must be ways of exposing or embarrasing them to do the right thing.

Hello OlFarts,
Yes it is a nice van, worth saving for further generations.
one would say its good for the historical society to use it as an office. Plenty of room to put their pamphlets, paperwork/items in cupboards then put out for display.
Encourage them to use it as a traveling piece of history. More people get enjoyment from seeing how thing were from the past.
For them to want to gut it and use it as a general purpose office is it seems going against what a "historical society "is about.
If your talking to their members doesn't work do what others have said, talk to the local media.
SHAME them to your way of thinking.
All the best with your effort.
Regards Shane

Hi all, I had a 48 and a 53 Furness and having to restore the 53 I learned a lot of their construction and believe me it doesn't bode well for cutting bigger windows in etc. as they have "prestwood" outside over very flimsy frame which has 15mm x12 mm diagonal "studs" with tarpaper glued to inside for light weight. The axles were ex army surplus jeep/ landrover trailer units with a huge bearing that I doubt would ever wear out. We only used the 48 once on a windy weekend where all the modern roll out awnings were being trashed in the wind. The old Furness stood like a rock. These peanuts need to think about what their aims are as an historical society. By the way both my Furnesses went to Tassy to be on display at a caravan dealers yard. Or so he said.

Hi Dave firstly our condolences to you and mrs old farts. Just realised this Furness has only one catch on the overhead cupboards like my 48. The 53 had two .Presumably to stop the doors from bowing out at each end as my 48 did. Sooo it is probably earlier than 53. regards Beetles
