Hi Shane and Simeon, I endorse what you say. Dona Ricardo and I visited the Victorians on Vacation exhibition when it was on at the State Library in Melbourne last January (2008). We found it really interesting. There are some fascinating photos and items on display, including some that would make any V V'ers heart glad. If anyone is in striking distance of Warrnambool or Mornington over the next couple of weeks, the exhibition is well worth a visit. Don Ricardo Addendum:Hey Shane and Simeon, I've just found an extra reason to thank you for starting this thread. After posting my reply above I went back to the SLV exhibition website, which I hadn't checked for many months, and found I got a Highly Commended for one of the photos I submitted in the photo competition run in tandem with the exhibition (see 'Wish You Were Here'). Unfortunately it wasn't the one with the V V in it, but I'm still really chuffed!! If you hadn't told people about the exhibition I may never have found out, so thanks. Just goes to show how V V'ers help each other in a myriad of ways. Don Ricardo

Thanks for the link to the State Library Shane.... in the “Image Library” of the “Interactive extras” page there is a photo of a car and caravan (the photo fourth from the end)..... I'll leave it to Kaybee to identify the car.. and Don R. to identify the caravan... 'cause I gotta go and eat me dinner . Cobber.

Hi Cobber, There was a bit of discussion about the identity of the vehicle and the caravan when the exhibition started. See Reply #2 onwards on the following thread: vintagecaravans.proboards30.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=390&page=1Predictably, Will identified the vehicle almost immediatelyas a '36 Chev. If he hadn't it would have been Kaybee as you suggested, or Firefighter (seeing that it was a Chev)! Don't you wonder where those guys store all that info in their heads? Misspent youth I guess - not like you and I! ;D ;D ;D Don Ricardo

You know, with more than 12 months under the bridge since we first looked at that photo and having looked at a whole lot more photos of Australian vans in that time, particularly in relation to DHL, I'm now wondering if the caravan could be an Australian built van after all.
The stripe down the side with the diamond shape on the front corner is very similar to the livery on a lot of South Australian vans of the 40's. Mind you the van does have a door at the back rather than the front, and I can't recall seeing any Australian vans with that, but I'm still wondering...

Hello Don & Cobber, while lots of the photos and displays were well before my time, my wife and I enjoyed our selfs, looking having a laugh at how things have changed. We could still remember some of the time and things when we were kids in the early 70s. Wasn't life more simpler then. The wife and kids are at the moment spending 2 weeks ( dad has to go back to work during the week) in Warrnambool in the caravan (modern 1992 Starcraft) at Surf Side. Kids having fun and meeting new friends, Victorians on vacation still is happing. Don, thanks for the link to the past thread about this expo, wasn't a member of this forum then, well done with you photo. Shane

G'day all, Well done Firefighter you have a 50% score, I didn't think it looked like a Chev emblem on the bonnet Now.... the caravan. The reason I say it's not a “Welton” is because they didn't start production in the UK until 1955 (according to my information). There were quite a few UK 'vans that had doors at the rear of the 'van during the course of their production... “Fairholme”.. “Thompson”... “Car Cruiser” to name a few, but only one Australian make that we have evidence of in our DHL forum.... the “Wolfenden”, and it was made in Victoria. Problem is we don't have photos of many of the 'vans they made. Can anybody help identify the van shown 4th from the end of this gallery shown at --- www.slv.vic.gov.au/programs/exhibitions/kmg/2007/victorians_on_vacation/online/index.htmlWhere are you Wolf . Cobber.
