Have been offered yet another caravan thats in my backyard ........well kinda sorta ......460 kms south east of Perth ......at least its not in Victoria ;D ;D Grandad commenced construction in1958, and completed it in 1960 .....and as Grandad was the local undertaker, it has an interesting 'touch' ;D ;D .......insofar as the front manouvreing handles are the same as those of a coffin ;D And its a biggin ......5.380 metres long (body only) on Chev 16 inch 6 stud wheels, and was towed by a V8 De Soto in its day. Its a ply and timber framed van supposedly built with boatbuilding craftmanship, it has some interesting features, including a shower, with all copper plumbing hand crafted by grandad, and lighting via gas lanterns, also handcrafted by grandad .......and yes, the aluminium kitchen bench also handcrafted. And .....the shower recess has a porthole Strangely for its size, it only has two single beds at the rear, and the front of the van has a large wrap around lounge. Apparently grandad & granma never slept together ......can't blame her really, I wouldn't sleep with an undertaker either ;D ;D ;D So folks, the farm has been sold, and the grand old undertakers caravan has to vacate the property ...... I can't really undertake it .......yeah ::)had 430 sq metres of shed, ........but ...... yeah ..... you guessed it ;D ;D Its only contact paper starting to peel off the wall ...... two single rear beds with drawers in between you're looking through the wardrobe mirror The interior shots certainly don't do it justice, obviously been used for storage for many years (imagine the treasures in there ) . Mark

Hi Mark As you know these big timber vans are few and far between. This would make a great resto project. Looks like a straight forward sand and paint job with very little wood cancer. I hope someone over your way grabs it and saves it from an unthinkable fate...... worse than what happened to the undertakers customers They wont tow it with your average late model cars... they would be too soft in the back end. Neeed a 4x4 or at least a one ton ute/pick up. Reddo

Very clever use of the overhang for the front and rear windows ..... stopping any leak problems in the tops of the windows...
Grab it with both hands and stack her aside until time and money permit a restoration...
Would be a real shame to see it follow the rest of grandad's work

Hi Daggsey, Morticia is such a cool name for that van, must admit picking a name for a van can be a hard task,Ive owned a few vans and only ever named one and that was because of the ladys name I bought it off Hazel. Got 2 names picked out for my sunliner but a bit worried they might reflect a bit on me still deciding . Cheers Dave

Howdy Kiwi, Perhaps you could spare some Cairns rainwater to fight bushfires in Bridgetown..........couldn't get much more divergent weather from diagonally opposed points of the country.........guess that's the nature of Australia...... Chippydave........agonised for months over naming "Lady Madonna"........."Morticia" came to me rather quickly, specially as I haven't even seen her in the flesh yet Mark T........seems to be we have an "m" pattern happening with vintagecaravans.com ............."Matilda", "Mildred", "Marvin", "Madonna", Morgan, Mt Gambier, Mildura, mad mexicans, Munmorah, M7, Murray (the guy who delivered Morticia) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D mmmmmhhhhh Daggsey oh yeah......Monaro

Hey Daggy, The fires are heading towards Greenbushes/ Balingup, so we will go up to your place this avo and get you some pics. How do you want them sent via email or the web? Thanks Kiwi for your thoughts, we are safe for the time being as the winds are now pushing the fire away from the town. I did see a nice silver sunlines in Greenbushes yesterday as we were coming home from the fires, hope it survives . regards Gem
