Hey all, I have just gotten back from a 4 week holiday from the U.S and am full of enthusiasm (I think that is spelt right ) to get my little van restored and back in service so I can start using it . I have had a look on the net at caravan clubs in S.A but none of them specifically target the vintage side of caravaning, so I thought I would put out the feelers and see if any of the Adelaide people on here were in a club or not. I am sure all of the caravan clubs listed on the net are good, but if I could find a club with a few vintage vanners that would be even better! I live in the northern suburbs (Parafield Gardens) but as we know Adelaide isn't that big so if everybody is down south then it's really no big deal to travel for meetings etc. Look forward to the responses!

Welcome aboard Andrew82 To find those that are in SA follow this link maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=102234449255730820031.0004484364735c7491930&ll=-34.755083, At the bottom of the forum page you see a title.. Members location map That will give you each state and the general location of each member that wants to be on the map Or just follow the link Likely there are a lot more people interested in Vintage vans in the area but prefer to remain anonymous Vintage Caravans isn't a club.. there is no president, treasurer etc Just a group of people that love vintage caravans each to his/her own style or brand It's a refreshing way of doing things and has worked now for many years So welcome and if you need any help or have any good ideas feel free to write them up and post them .... we all are happy to help or have new/different ideas posted What type of van do you have? If you post some photos some of our members may have similar vans or problems that need repair ... They will help as they can. Cheers Atog Ps Sorry .... I am in Cairns ..... slightly too far for a days drive

Hey Olfarts,
to remove nails do the following
set van on fire sit and watch burn (drink and nibbles optional) when fire out wave large magnet over ashes you will then have all the nails.
Just one question Why do you want the old nails? It isn't that dear to buy new ones!
good luck,
Leigh.

Welcome to the site, Good to see another van being restored. I have a few caravans that are restored or in the process of being done. Have met others from the site at VV runs and car runs (such as pymie) I also bumped into the Royal VVanners at Jamestown a couple of weeks back. Drop me a PM and we may catch up. I'm inner-south 8kms from town. As the others have said this is a very casual site with a real laid back Vin Vanners that get together for some fun in the great outdoors. If you need help or advise please contact me as I love to restore the old girls. Cheers retro1

Great to get some good responses! Pymie2, Your just around the corner from where my Dad and my van live - they are both at Rockleigh! I will have to drop in there next time I am up there or vice versa as now Dad and and I are back from our seperate holidays I want to be full steam ahead on the little van. Dad is the ultimate handyman but is very green when it comes to caravans, so someone expieranced round the corner could come in handy. Hi Atog, I will post pics of my little van soon! I had worked out that the whole vintage vans thing wasn't a formal club but it seems they don't join normal van clubs. Hope fully we can get together and organise some stuff. Doesn't have to be alot, a couple of things per year would be fine. Hey olfarts, I have been to Aldinga beach recently and boy what a drive it's a l o n g way. But still your 16 footer intruiges me so you might see me sooner rather than later. Some pics would be really good! Last but not least Retro1, Very keen to meet you and your vans. I will pm you and come up for sure. It would be good to get some more inspration Thanks also for the support. I dare say I will be calling on the fellow vintage vanners as this will be a huge learning curve for both Dad and I. I will post pics soon and hope to meet you all soon. Now 1st question, does anybody know a good caravan parts supplier? the only one I have been to (somewhere in Elizabeth) was completely useless and dodged every question better than a politician!! I left more confused than when I went in .

Ok, ok, I admit it, it was us!
We went to S.A. a coupla weeks ago to pick up the Clipper. We had spoken to Olfarts and when we foumd out there was a swap meet on at Strathalbyn on the Sunday we figured we would go down and visit Dave and Cookie and then swing across to Strath for the swap.
We got halfway to Aldinga when the front of the trailer let go. By the time I roped it up and got to Daves it was too late to get to Strath so we stayed the night. (and what a good night it was)
Dave organised a mate to open his workshop and weld up the trailer on the Sunday morning which, while we missed the swap, at least we were ok to get the new treasure home. A big public thanks to D & C for their hospitality and help, just what this group is all about.
I will post pics as soon as I get time. Too busy working on the van at the moment.
cheers, Leigh & Karon

I'm up for it! but my van won't be on the road for a little while yet but at least im working on it! Still it would be good to organise something to put a face to a name. I was thinking a caravan park that also had cabins and unpowered sites for those like me who won't be able to bring along a van. Personally I love Moonta bay which is under 2 hours from Adelaide but I'll go wherever really.

Hi Everyone
We ( that is Libby and John ) also live in Adelaide, and would enjoy catching up with other Vintage Vanners.
Being in Marino, we do not mind traveling North or South, when it comes to taking the 1967 Viscount ( which we are resurrecting )out for a Mini Holiday ...work permitting that is.
Ultimatley it would be great to Tow the 15 Foot Viscount with our FB Holden Sedan or EK Holden Ute. Both have the Grey Motor, so I will have to do a couple of test drives first, to see if the Grey Motor is up to the challange.
Keep us in mind when a get together is organised.
Regards John

Hi Rejko,
I believe that your grey engine Holden will tow your 15' Viscount OK.
I towed a 1969 15' Viscount Royal for a number of years with an FE Holden Standard Sedan without any particular problems. Only mods to the the vehicle was a PBR Brake Booster and pump-up air shocks on the rear. We managed to get as far north as Townsville, south to Melbourne, across to Adelaide, and back through Broken Hill. Another time did the Murray River run to Adelaide and back via Melbourne. Did quite a few short haul trips nearer to home (Goulburn, NSW) as well, including traversing Kangaroo Valley, Macquarie Pass and Bulli Pass (both up and down).
Only break down ever suffered was the bottom lugs broke off the column gear-change tube, which ran down the steering wheel shaft, and even then we drove some miles to the caravan park just past Maclean, NSW, beside the river, in 2nd gear, with the van on. I selected 2nd gear by hand whilst laying underneath the car, then got in, and with a lot of clutch work got the old girl underway.
It was hilarious as we speedily entered the caravan park, still in 2nd gear, camping just where we finally stalled, after a last few kangaroo hops.
After spending an eternity getting the steering wheel off (without a puller) the local garage man repaired the gear tube, I put it back together and we carried on.
When it's all said and done before 1963 there were only grey engines and a lot of 15' vans towed with them.
Cheers, Ian.

Hi Lazza, good to have you abord! as always the more the merrier. When not if we decide a run it will be definantly be on a weekend as most people work during the week. We will keep everybody informed, so keep your eyes peeled Rekjo, I am very interested in meeting you as I have a fb sedan myself and have been obsessed with them since I was 10. I am now keen for a ute but will have to wait till funds permit and I get a few other projects out the way, 1 being my late 50's early 60's home made van.

Thanks Jikah for the words of encouragement regarding the Grey Motor Holdens, I had better start looking at getting tow bars fitted to the FB & EK Holden.
Hey Andrew82 FB Holdens are an obsession aren't they. Your 50's/60's caravan will look great behind your FB. Yes It would be good to catch up with you to discuss FB's....and Vintage Vans of course.

Hi All, A get together is a great idea. Weekends are fine for me. If it turns into a VV weekend, my only problem will be the distance to travel in a short space of time. I have a grizzly grey motor, and it seems to take a while to get from Pinnaroo to anywhere, with a VV in tow!! Also after our 48 deg day here y'day, a slightly cooler time would be great. Cheers Steve

Hi all, How about a get together at this years caravan and camping show at Wayville Showgrounds.
We, ( Chrysler Restorers Club members), have 15 or more old vans and tow vehicles on display. There will probably be a parade through King William st to the show if the show organisers get their way. They want to have TV cameras etc. there to publicise the show.
Saturday and Sunday probably suits most re work although that means the show will have lots more people there to interupt our 'meeting'.
Regards Beetles

Hi Olfarts, sorry but we both still work and don,t get to the computer every night. A get together in SA would be good , preferrably before we get to your age of retirement.LOL!!! Seriously what about Mannum or Murray Bridge , so its not too far and a bit more realistic for Steve from Pinnaroo, or if anyone else has a better idea.

All sound like somethings happening, sure would be good to meet more S.A V.V people and even have a cold ale or some, if we make our selves noticed we could even gather some info on other hidden treasures , then we could even have a road trip, lots of stuff happening but always squeeze meeting like minded folks and yeah cold ale or some Rod

Hi Guys,
Sorry to butt in on your almost organised get together, but seeing as my maps were referred to earlier, I thought I'd prompt you all. I have taken the liberty of lifting some info from some of the posts to update the SA map, but I noticed that at least 3 of you aren't listed.
If you'd like to be added (by suburb only) please let me know by PM, if you would prefer not to be, please do the same.
Cheers Chris
P.s Perhaps if someone picks a specific location and a selection of dates, you could confirm a trip?

Hi All Sorry, I don't get on the site every day either. Murray Bridge/Mannum sounds great. But if this area doesn't suit others, I will try to get to wherever. Regards Steve

Hi, to all Sth Aussies,
Watching this post with great interest. Would love to meet the SA contingent of VV's. Our van is still a 'work in progress' but is looking good now that her 'bones are covered with skin' again and she has her undercoat on. Will bring pictures to the get-together. Just post the date and location. Weekends are best for us.
Regards Ann & Stephen
