I'm about to stick my head up out of the sand and expect it to be used as a football, but what the heck............... I don't think the "Whatever" section should be passworded.........my feeling is, if it doesn't meet the "rules" as outlined in the Pro-Boards agreement, it shouldn't be on this web site, locked or unlocked, period. To have that section "locked" and with a "warning" is admitting to the world that we have something to hide; that we condone unsavoury jokes, prejudices or "whatever" and makes a mockery of what most of us have just gone through signing the "agreement". During the "rectum stretcher" saga, a comment was made by Earlee which pretty much went through to the keeper.....no response from anyone..............the comment he made??.......there are plenty of "joke" websites out there......this is a vintage caravan site. Minicamper was lambasted because he felt that taking the "p.ss" out of coppers was in poor taste and that he lacked humour.....privately I agreed with him, but didn't make any comment ( no, I wasn't one of the supposed "silent minority" to PM Mark). After the public tongue-lashing that Minicamper received, why would anyone in their right mind want to have made a comment contrary to those who expressed the view that Minicamper was a wet blanket.......and in the same breath say that Australia has lost it's sense of democracy, fair play and freedom of speech. I am not a prude ;)and believe I have laughed at and probably told some of the bluest, most "politically incorrect" jokes that abound. I thought the "rectum stretcher" joke was humerous (I think I heard it about 20 years ago)........what I thought was not appropriate was where it was told....on a public forum about vintage caravans . Then of course, like giggling school kids, the rash of jokes started, most of which all of us have received as emails over the past 10 years and apparently this was all something new and exciting and this was supposed to prove a point as to how grown-up we all are To my way of thinking, the quick-witted humour of a Reddo or a Will (dare I mention his name ) or a Gristy or indeed anyone in their posts far out-weighs the plonking of hackneyed jokes about coppers, blondes, nuns etc on this site. Just my two-bobs worth....I'll go and put a motorcylce helmet on now Daggsey ;D ;D ;D p.s have you heard the one about the gay, Irish, blond nun who wanted to become a plumber..............

Greetings fellow vanners If it wasnt for the people and thier regular contributions ( and thier sense of humour - sick , twisted or otherwise) there wouldnt be a website. The vans dont do the posting . People do. Just like the vans, people come in all shapes , sizes, personalitys and attitudes.. as has been proven here in the past. We will never .. ever.. get total agreement on any topic . Whether it be water based paint v oil based, stock or modified., Jokes v sterile vintage van only info As sure as there is poop in a cat.... ooops there i go again.. sorry sensitive types...we will always have "debates" ... differences of opinion., it is only human nature to do so. I am a member of 4 other web forums. All have areas for Jokes, dumb spits and off topic stuff. They all have a warning about .. possible offensive material in the header. What makes us here at www.vintagecaravans.com so different/prudent to all the other web forums that we should decide not to have a similar facility and hence insulate ourselves from the real ( outside the forum) world. To quote Daggsey "what I thought was not appropriate was where it was told....on a public forum about vintage caravans". Are we really that different to other people with other hobbys on other forums..?? I dont think we are. At a rough guess i would say that 99% of the forum members are over 18 and therefore are likely to be exposed to some sort of obscenitys either visual or verbal during the day . Swearing, Adults only rated TV and Movies, general conversation in the work place and so on. Yellowuki is 16. Not sure where he is at in life at the moment .. still at school or working but i bet he is exposed to the same level of foul language etc as the rest of us on a daily basis. Dont get me wrong i am not suggesting we open the flood gates and let the whatever section turn into straight out smut. I believe we here on the forum have done a great job of self regulating/censoring ourselves in the past and will continue to do so. If some sicko bungs something totally out of line in the whatever section i am sure the moderators would pounce on it quite smartly. They do a great job of keeping the rubbish off our forum . For some reason if it the things we see and hear in our everyday lives is typed by someone and put here on the forum some people go into a tailspin . I know i posted the concept of having "Whatever" password protected and i still consider it an option ....But........ Are we not adult enough to make a subconcious decision when we log on to the forum not to open and browse the "Whatever" section ??. People can "mentally lock out" that area and make it thier own "No go zone"if it has been known to cause them anguish or grief in the past. We do it with most other things in life. If we have had a bad experience somewhere or with someone we tend not to go back to that venue or correspond with that "someone". Cafe, club, entertainment venue, sporting fixture i am sure we could all name somewhere or something that has been put in our own mental "No go zone" OK then , we can consider what Daggsey has suggested. Although i disagree with totally sanitising the forum and disallowing jokes.. Just leave it as it is Mark. But i still subscribe to the idea of removing "Whatever" from the "Last 25 posts so that when people scroll through them they wont exposed to what may be deemed as decadence / offensive material. Mark All i ask is that you make a decision soon so that we can get on with the show. Reddo

London Times Obituary For The Late Mr. Common Sense
'Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who
has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was,
since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He
will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the
worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more
than you can earn) and reliable strategies: adults, not children, are in
charge.
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended
from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the
job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
children. It declined even further when schools were required to get
parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student;
but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted
to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses;
and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in
her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his
wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He
is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now,
Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If
you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do
nothing.'

Howdy Reddo, I think we are sort of on the same wavelength and my sympathy goes out to the administrators making a decision on this issue............and Mark did ask for input. My understanding of the "Whatever" section was that Mark set it up so we could start threads that were "off topic"...i.e., not necessarily directly related to vintage vanning in Australia or didn't fit under one of the established headings (e.g., gps, dressing gowns in caravan parks , fuel prices, Airstreams , the disappearance of Australia's heritage etc) and other topics that included lighthearted banter and with the occasional joke thrown in.....(I particularly appreciated your joke about "decking at Bunnings" ;D ;D ;D....). I don't think I have said anywhere about banning jokes The concern I had with the "rectum stretcher" saga was not the joke itself, but the way Minicamper was treated because he dared to put his hand up and make a comment and was summarily executed. And then, to rub salt into his wounds, the plethora of jokes suddenly appeared as if to say that the likes of Minicamper and others had no sense of humour. And yes Firefighter......., Minicamper's attempted humour about a 16 year old boy in "Not the Kingswood" I found offensive......obviously others didn't as no comment was made and Minicamper was not asked to modify his post. So, like you rightly say Reddo, this forum is made up of many people with different attitudes and views and without the people there would be no forum.....I guess it is because of that we have to be careful when we stretch the boundaries.......I'm not saying don't stretch the boundaries, just be prepared to accept others views if they believe that the boundary has been breached. I reckon there is a difference between spontaneous humour, wit and banter, and hackneyed "jokes" lifted straight out of a joke book or the internet. I can assure all and sundry that I would hate to see the forum sanitised, constipated, sterilised or whatever, and because of the above, I still believe the "whatever" section should be left unlocked, (not unlike the "Rants, Raves and Dummyspits" section of the FE-FC Forum.) ZEN AND THE WISDOM OF LIFE 1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me alone. 2. It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbour's newspaper, that's the time to do it. 3 . No one is listening until you fart. 4 . If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a car payment. 5 . Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away, and you have their shoes. 6 . If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you. 7 . Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day. 8 . If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it may have been well worth it.. 9 . Don't worry. It only seems kinky the first time. 1 0 . Good judgment comes from bad experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. 1 2 . There are two theories about arguing with women. Neither one works. 13 . Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it. 14 . Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative at the same time. earlee

Here we go again, another debarcle. For the record. Sorry MC, your comment on 16yo bla bla, was not really in good taste, I didn't comment at the time (even though it was a thread I started) because, I let some things slide, that was one of them. Myself, I think any sort of comment regarding a minor is highly innapropriate, regardless of the intent (and I am sure your intent was simple humour, and really one of those things that generally a bunch of blokes laugh at and forget, and was probably taken out of context by some of us). I believe that was probably the reason behind MCs rather unkind 'execution' as Dagssey fairly put it. At the same time, I find nothing offensive about taking the P*** out of someone because of their profession, lucky, because I spent a number of years of my life as a car salesman!! For the record I have a close mate who is an x copper who sometimes emails me copper jokes, and they are generally forwarded from his mates who are still in the force. I believ it is an Aussie tradition to take the mickey out of each other and ourselves, so long as it is not spiteful, it is okay by me. Hence my comment on the fact that unless we want to stick our heads in our ass we will at some point be offended by the media, someone in public etc etc. We are grownups and need to make our own decisions on what we chose to read, watch, participate in. I agree with Daggsey that I have no interest with "Whatever" becoming a dedicated joke column, but I doubt that will occur. Agreed though some jokes here and there are cool. I think the password (which would not exactly be a secret or anything), is about prompting people that they are entering an area that is probably full of non VV related BS. Lets face it, the real wowsers will deliberately go looking for stuff to bitch about, so a password won't stop them. Regardless of whether the password occurs, I feel exclusion from the last 25 posts is a must, that way anyone only interested in VV related threads wont get annoyed, and people like me who also enjoy a laugh and some general banter about life, travelling GPS, Daggseys dressing gown, etc, can wander over to the Whatever section. I feel if possible it would be good to restrict guests from posting there since there is absolutely no purpose for it. Jeeezuz, that was way more than my two bobs worth, sorry. Nah, I'm not really sorry, if you chose to read all that it's your problem ;D Did you hear the one about the website, where all these great people with a fantastic common interest kept scrapping and bitching with one another? No? Probably not, because its not funny. Please lets move on...... Cheers, Gristy

Hey Gristy and others, I don't think this is becoming a debarcle......Mark asked for input and I gave an alternative which I think is healthy debating. A debarcle, to my way of thinking, is when a debate turns personal and things get nasty . I did say in my last post that Reddo and I were kinda on the same wavelength. I do understand the thinking behind Reddo and others' answer to the problem in not having the "Whatever" section posts appear in the "last 25 posts" and requiring a password to enter. Passwording is fine....no special password needed.....just your own login, like going in to the "Classic Caravans" section. I was simply raising the point (probably in a long-winded fashion ;D) that possibly this was a double-standard.....we signed an agreement concerning personal content on the forum, but then we have a sealed section that could possibly contain material that runs contrary to that agreement. I suppose if the adminstrators are comfortable that there is no way they can be sued, so be it. My other concern is, if someone wants to post interesting stuff, like e.g. "Gps" ;D ;D ;D (which Admin rules as non-vv related and it gets deleted from "General"), it may get lost in "Whatever" because a lot of members only look at the last 25 posts, and there is nowhere else to post such items. I reckon I am confusing myself here Yair Mark........just lock it ;D ;D ;D Daggsey
