For those of you that haven't seen the baby bondy delivered home on the weekend, here's a shot of the drawer bar.. I'm curious to know what people can tell me about this. I'm not really that keen on it, and will most likely strengthen it by welding joints. I'm guessing it was a "no welding required" kit? The entire chassis is the same. The actual hitch and mount has obviously been changed... Cheers Chris

Worst case of steel whiteants i have seen in a long time. or "Steelpeckers".... ...Poor relations of the canadian woodpecker,,,,, but a much tuffer bird...... .. you got steelpeckers down your way Perhaps the previous owner got a drill and a set of bits for Christmas and was keen to try 'em out Mummsywouldnt let him practice on the family A40 so he took to the draw bar...nnnnnnniiiiicccccceeeeee !!!! In all honesty i dont think it would have weakend the bar by much anyway.. I wander if he remembered to unclip the wiring from the bar before he started drilling holes. Sure would use up a lot of insulation tape putting " bandages" on the cable ;D Reddo

;D ;D ;D ;D Hi Chris ... Sometimes i wander if you would be better off making your own decisions on matters of this nature..... Or better still ask yourself the hard questions before ya lug these old vans home... "what am i going to do with this when i get home"?? "Do i really want to restore it?"? You have reacted to our replys.... It could be worse... We could be charging for our services. "So.. ya want the truth.....You wont handle the truth" The chassis looks like it has been made by someone that got the steel on the cheap... aka .. knocked it off from work. Woe, woe.. what to do Remove the entire body from the van and make a new chassis out of proper c section..... Naa didnt think ya would want ta hear that either... Better off stickin' with the bullshit meter .. its a lot better option than what reality is telling you to do with it. Reddo

hi minicamper, You call them holes??. Lucilles chassis has proper holes But why I can never fathom. With your chassis, has it got any stress cracks/bends, etc at load Points? Or is it quite straight & looks OK. If the van looks OK underneath & is registered, I wouldn't change it. Just keep your eye on it, & if looks like bending, then stiffen it up in that area. Yours is one I would put in the "if it aint broke dont fix it" basket. Jailbarjuice

Hi Chris I believe the new Jaycos (or they were 4 years ago) & the Viscount Aerolites of the 80's had holes in their chassis also. This was to keep the van lighter and I don't know if they had any problems. I would be doing as JBJ suggested - keeping an eye on it and only strengthening if & where needed. A metal fabrication shop should know by looking at it if it is safe to do the job & should be able to suggest where & if strengthening should be applied. Wouldn't go into overkill with it as light is good for your Austin. Thanks Neil
