Cobber, here's a new thread, You asked for some snaps so here they are of the Overland “styleliner’ towed home from Melbourne by the authentic 1956 tow vehicle! No just kidding! But that fergie might have got some road rage going! Pretty useful for the last 200 metres into the shed Even the dog said, what the f…………have you brought home this time! But we reckon those cupboards would wipe the smiles off those Don owners faces we might not have a bath and a crappy little blue basin but we’ve got a cutlery drawer(with 2 sections) and a chopping board! MG] First things first…up with the old carpet, and yes its got lovely lino tiles! sadly, life ain’t perfect, and yes the Styleliner has got the rots, never mind, we’ll fix you up! Of course, several months later, work is going ever so slowly, but we’re getting closer to getting her on the road. replaced the ends of the bearers, front and back, some new studs, and some new double ply Well, at least the cups are ready!

Hi Smiles,
Great to see some more pics of your Overland, and to see the work you're doing there. I'm sure that once you've finished the restoration it will look a million dollars. I think that this is the only Overland that's turned up on the forum, so that also makes it a very worthwhile project. Another bit of Australia's touring heritage preserved and enjoyed.
You pointed out the cupboards, and they're certainly nicely done. I notice the whopping big overhead cupboards - are they as big as they look? Looks like you could hide half a house in there - although it might make the van a bit top heavy! ;D ;D
I'm looking forward to seeing more photos as the work progresses, and hopefully your dog will end up being impressed as well. ;D ;D

Nice work Smiles.....and a nice van too. A bit of rot there, but looks like you're taking care of that. A very neat interior and I too like the cutlery drawer and chopping board. I like the little features like that in old vans. (A bit like the lined bread cupboard in mine). cheers and look forward to more pics along the way. Cheers, gristy

Nice van smiles ;D ;D ;D Always good to see another old van being woken from its barnyard slumber and coaxed back into use. I really enjoy seeing the inside shots of all these old vans. Never ceases to amaze me the ingenuity of some of the early van constructors. Love the lino, cupboards, round edged retro style wardrobe, etc..I notice in one of the pix there is an old brown tumbler switch . the rest of the switches and points are from the late 50s. ( Reddo was a 'lecko for 20 years) . The big hinges on the ice chest remind me of the doors on the old "underbar" fridges at the pub. I missed out on a 10ft long cedar bar fridge with 6 doors on it and had the same hinges and latching mechs.. We where at a pub out the bush not far from my place and the hotelier had just removed the old unit and was installing a newy. Old bloke across the road had just laid claim to it as we pulled up on the bikes... oooo bugger. would have made a great talking point in my BBQ area.... and kept the beers extra cool . Looks like your doing a good job on eradicating the rot. "Better to glue and screw than to nail and fail." She will come a great with a coat of paint . keep us posted on your progress. Never forget that"Bondys Rule OK ;D" ( no matter who built em) Reddo .

Hey Smiles, Love the inside fittings with the art deco rounded wardrobe - very cool I would like to do it to mine but the only original internal fitting except for the sink is the wardrobe and I am trying to keep it. She is in very good nick - must have been under cover and cared for. I don't know anything about the 'Styleliner' but she looks like a well constructed van and from the aluminium windows etc. about early 60s ?? looking forward to more photos. Cheers, tonyh ;D

G'day Smiles,
What is the overall length of the Overland and can you show us a close up of that little plate down beside the door..... does it have a serial # on it ?
I like the old "Fergie" too...... new tyres on the rear ?
Cobber.

Your right Col. Smiles didnt mention he was intending to modify his van at all. Your right Cobber I did modify my original post I took out the bit about painting it to suit the owners own taste. designing your own stipes for the side. Fitting a few extra nick knacks in the van to make the van more liveable / comfortable when using the van. End result would be a statement of the owners personality.. being an individual. I went on to state that in the big picture we are only temporary custodians of these things and in years to come, long after smiles is finished with the van . the new owners could return it to original by doing a few days work with a few hundred dollars worth of paint. After i posted it i figured i was suggesting that smiles should take make my advise .. i realised that he can do what he likes with his van while he owns it without coersion or influence from others.. Therefore i went back and removed my comments from the original post. Meanwhile..... keep the picture coming smiles. ..I wasnt aware of just how you found out about the van..... and good onya for retrieving this old van from its resting place when no-one else wanted it.. Hi all Thanks for comments. Yes Col is right, thank goodness for hotroders and tele, and Kris & Col of course, who helped us get this van. We love the van and plan to keep it as original as possible. In fact the photos with the Nov dates show uncleaned cupboards, so we probably think we will keep the inside paint as is, without repainting. It's come up pretty good with cleaning, and I got all the carpet gum off the floor with the orange oil...it worked a treat Col. Life's little dings in the floor and cupboards make it feel pretty lived in, like the previous owners just moved out. We've re-done window seals and have new door seals and ice box seals to do. I've removed the little brass plate for exterior painting, unfortunately no serial number. An owner left his name/address (near Melb airport) under the Vanguard hubcaps. Google earthed him in, but looks like he's in the earth. 16" V/guard rims, no brakes, stepped axle...I'm working up to the brakes. Will weigh it first. Yes the wheels do fit the wheel arches very nicely, shame to change it. BUT we plan to put a lightning stripe down the side with the original name of van in sign-written decals, once it's all painted on the exterior. Re cupboards, yes, lots of them. The long shelf over the day/night van is meant for the hunter/gatherers...put yer fishin rod and gun up there just where the kiddies can reach them. Lucky we were all whipped into shape back then, hey? I've described the electrical system in the 240/12v thread. It's a real beauty. managed to get some old fuses, and away it went after ? years. Still playing with towhitch (has a 2.25" ball), jockey wheel, cushions, curtains. Replaced the door flyscreen with some nice old brass wire hiding in the shed. And just discovered a bit more rot in the hatch......
