Hi everyone This is our 1952 Don Caravan. We purchased the van from the original owners in 1993 and have been regularly using it since. we are members of Classic & Hsitoric Automobile Club of Australia and tow the van with our 1934 Pontiac 8 sedan. We have been on many rallies, including to Queensland once, Sydney, Wagga Wagga, Albury, various tours throught Victoria and NSW. We travel to the Bay to Birdwood every second year, usually touring throughout Vic and SA. In 2006 we towed the van in the actual Bay to Birdwood. We love our van, it is excellent order inside and nearly as good on the outside. We have added override mechanical brakes and reduced the wheel size. The ice chest had been removed and we have installed an electric fridge in the space. The sink and wall mounted water tank had also been removed. We have installed a stainless steel sink which is age apropriate and remodelled the top section of the kitchen cupboards to make it fit. We have a two burner gase stove instead of the petrol. The van weights 650k and we find it tows exceptionally well behind the Pontiac. We are about to repaint the outside, as this has to be a regular occurence with a wooden van. We get lots of comments on our travels. The car and caravan was a feature article in "Restored Cars" number 151. It is body 604 Ray and Margaret.

G'day Ray and Margaret & welcome to the forum, Cobber here.... I am not actually a “Don” tragic, just a bloke who appreciates a class act when I see one, and your combination is certainly that. Apart from seeing photos of the inside I would like to hear a bit about the condition your 'van was in when you got it, I have just acquired one in a bit of a sad state , particularly on the outside, and I need encouragement to do what needs to be done. I imagine you have been told about the “Don” history section on this forum that has been compiled by some real “Don” tragics, you can see it by clicking on the link below.... there are other links there where you can see a few other “Dons” owned by members of the forum. Just as an aside..... do members of the “Classic & Historic Automobile Club of Australia” regard themselves as “purists”.... that is do they insist on originality (as close as possible) and on a certain standard of presentation at club displays ? If that sounds like a loaded question.... don't worry about it vintagecaravans.proboards30.com/index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=2014Cobber.

Hi Ray and Margaret,
Welcome to the forum from another Don owner.
I met some of your friends at the recent Vintage Caravans national rally at Mount Gambier, who told me about your van. I've been meaning to give you a ring ever since, so it's great to see your van up on the screen. It looks in great condition. I'd have to say I'm pretty impressed with the Pontiac as well - a lovely vehicle. You've obviously had some great trips away with them both.
Our van has had a couple of the same modifications as yours - brakes (electric in our case), reduced wheel size (because of the brakes), and ice chest replaced with a frig.
We look forward to hearing more about your van.
Don Ricardo
