Hi myvan, it will be a pleasure to see your van on friday night, as we are quite excited to see our van Dorothea on the show as well, what sort of van is yours? We are unsure as to what design Dorothea is, maybe just a homemade perhaps, anyway its all good for the vv scene! Cheers Exocet

Hi Exocet If you go to the members page my caravan was called Marilyn (originally) Then with all different types of things/ subjects etc from the 50's and 60's I had collected Marilyn didnt seem to fit anymore so its been Alice ever since! It is made by John Walsh Maitland NSW If you go to my web site its easier to see all the photos. www.angelfire.com/blog/vintage/van/We are not great restorers or have the no how so we will just keep Alice registered and on the road and do repairs when needed. I like to decorate Alice more than restoring her! The ply needs replacing in some parts but I dont really want to pull it all apart and start a restoration job so she will just be as she is. A new paint job one day though as its only a temporary paint job at the moment. From your pics Dorothea looks lovely Cheers Kathryn ( and some help from husband Paul when I need it ! ) PS We dont have a great tow car so everyone has a go at us for not having a vintage tow car !

Hey Exocet and Kathryn,
Great to see both your vans on the Collectors program tonight. Well done to both of you.
Exocet - I enjoyed the vision on Dorothea. She looks even better than I had already gathered from the photos of your recent time away. She's in really good nick. Did you do the most recent paint job? If so very nicely done.
Kathryn - it was good to hear a bit more about Alice. What do you know about John Walsh? Did he build the van just for himself or did he build vans on a commercial basis? You may have already discussed this in a previous post. Apologies if so.
Anyway congratulation. With the story on the Collectors tonight each of you has contributed a bit more to the growing interest in V V's... Speaking of which I thought the Collectors' expert was a bit out of date in his price estimates. But then both your vans are priceless!!

Hey Exocet, Can I come out of the corner yet ;D ;D Okay, I deserved that one. Hopefully these days at demo derbies they wreck 70s white aluminium things and leave classic tinnies and bondys alone! Back to the thread...... spewing i was at work still so missed the show. However, just checked it out on abc.net. I think that they should put an on screen apology to Kathryn for their grossly innacurate valuation. I would have expected much better from the ABC. Nice of them to give vintvanning some publicity, but if anyone watching the show gets the idea they are going to get into vintage caravanning for a measly few hundred bucks they will be dissapointed. Tinnie ;D (the cheeky Mexican) (No insult or inference intended toward natives or inhabitants of the south american country of the same name)

Hi Don Ricardo, thanks for your comments about Dorothea , yes we did the last paint job, only about 3mths ago, whilst she does look good, she does have wear and tear, the cameras were very kind, but she is a very solid little van, with no leaks, but she does have some minor rot in her, but nothing to panic about just yet, the roof vent is permanently closed shut at the moment, as we lent her to a friend[very relunctantly i might add] and they forgot to secure the lid down and of course it blew off at 80km per hr, never to be seen again, but it wouldn't take much to fix it, but like everybody else on this forum, we still enjoy the V V experience! exocet

Hi Tinnie, did you see the thread about a lady wanting to borrow a V V at Lakes Entrance for some sort of exhibition or similar? Crikey these V V's are sought after aren't they! cheers exocet

I thought the segment was good. Dorothea looked in really good condition BUT $500-$600 is way off for Alice Alice cost $1000 which is very reasonable Then my husband got it on the road and did a few little things mechanical. Its registered so for $500-$600 is inncorrect. We will just do cosmetic work on it and keep it original to take to shows etc. I just sent the photo in to the show and they rung me so it can only help the cause and stop the Caravan smash up derbys ! Don Ricardo see what I have just found out UPDATE 23/4/07 These are the current responses on the offical Collectors forum where you can post feed back. Mrs Ardel Prout: 50's Caravan 20/4/07 John Walsh was a pioneer of the Caravan Industry. He had caravans at Bathurst during WWII, was a director of Carapark, Sydney/Newcastle and later his own John Walsh Caravans, Maitland Rd., Mayfield West. I am his neice and worked for him from 1958-1962. He & his wife Iris were my foster parents. Mark: 1950s Caravans I was dissapointed at the innacuracy of the value put on the little 10 foot caravan. I have recently seen an unrestored caravan of similar size and age sell for 6 times that valuation, and a very nicely restored one sell for almost ten times. Otherwise a good segment on a very popular and growing hobby.

Thanks Exocet, I did see the post, Lakes Entrance is only a couple of hours away for me, but I can't help on that weekend. (And I'm not in the habit of lending my van to anyone else to tow - especially when I've only used it once. Otherwise it would be a good opportunity to put Vintage Vans on show in that part of the world. Maybe someone else in Gippsland might be able to help them out? And vintage caravanning! Tinnie

Hi Kathryn,
Nice to hear about the message from John Walsh's niece. I haven't seen the Collectors forum - are you able to contact any of the people posting messages?? It would be great for you to be able to contact Ardel Prout. Seeing that she worked with John Walsh she would possibly be able to tell you some of the history of his vans and their development.
