Hui Guys. I am looking at fitting standard 14" HK/T/G rims on the FC Van as i dont think i can fit anything wider than that under the front gaurds. Anyone tried sumimoto or Maxxis tyres before. www.holdencarparts.com.au/whitewall-tyres,name,3491,auction_id,auction_details Bloody cheap at $350 for 4 205/75 X14s. Is it the old adage... "It costs less because you get less (quality)" Reddo

Gidday Reddo,
Link didn't work for me either.
Never heard of sumimoto or maxxis tyres but have heard of sumitomo tyres.
Like Col said, I'd try John Cain in Broadmeadow. He sells American Diamond Back Classics and Coker tyres from memory.
His ph number is 02 4946 6171.
There again, $350 is cheap for 4 tyres.
If they are round ,black, and made of rubber I'd say go for 'em and see how they go.
Cheers,
Terry.

hi reddo, maxxis, sumitomo and nankang are all about the same quality of price range tyre. I fitted 185/75/14 nankangs to kermit the HX and they seem to do the job ok. cost was $376 fitted and balanced at a local bridgestone store. you may find that 205/75/14 tyre on a stock HT rim is too wide and detrimental to handling.

Hi Reddo, I've got a set of Sumitomo whitewalls on the HD. They've been on the car for 4 years and I've had no worries apart from the white rubber turning brown. This is aparently a common problem with Japanese tyres.

hi reddo
i've had a set of nankang whitewalls on the victoria for more than 10 years (under the portawalls) and they've probably got enough tread for another couple of years.
probably getting a bit hard now, so i'm thinking of changing them.

hi HDtodd, ;D try cleaning your whitewalls with Jiff and a green scourer - they should come up well. Never use silicon as it makes them go yellow. regards earlee. ;D

Hi Reddo,
You are obviously not paying attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have Sumitomo tyres on just about everything.
We put a set on the Vagabond and then I had another set of rims made for the Teardrop and had the same tyres fitted to match the car just for the Darwin trip. These were the ones on when we stopped in on the way home.
They wear well, grip well, look good, right price, whitewalls (only narrow but still ok). I had no problems at all with the tyres for the whole trip, even beat the Oodnadatta track easily. One front tyre wore unevenly due to a front end alignment problem, nothing to do with the tyre itself.
I heard a rumor (on here I think) that the Whitewall Sumi's were no longer available but haven't looked into it, the 3 on the TD are coming off for spares for the Vagabond and the 16" wires are going back on.
I wouldn't hesitate to fit Sumitomos again when needed,
Cheers for now, Leigh.

Try this link
Sounds like these tyres are a reasonable buy then. I would only run 195s if i fitted them to the FE van . Just wish they made em with a wider whitewall.

Thanks for that tip earlee, they're starting to get bad and it's very noticeable on a white car. If anyone is after a good set of whitewalls that don't go brown, the HK has Michelins which look very close to the originals. They were put on the car just before I bought it (18 months ago) so I'm not sure how much they cost?

hi , i have several sets of cooper ribbon walls on my american cars , ( white walls have a wide band from rim out usually around 4'' , ribbon walls are one/quarter the price and have a narrower band of white ) as above, you can buy coopers anywhere, i think they are called trendsetters, no joke, they seem to be good on heavy usa cars, -- white walls = $300-$400 each , ribbon walls around $120., if you never never go you will never never know, bigkel,

Hi Guys Thanks for the "heads up" about the tyres. I apologise about the spellin' mistooks .... sumo... sumitupo... i think yas know what i waz talkn aboot. One day you will be as old as me and have drank as many longnecks as i have. Then we will be able to have a sensible conversation. The "thin white line" ( ribbon) just doesnt do it for me I really want to bung on a something with a wide whitewall. I'm talking 50mm or better so i am gunna have to aim at portawalls. cause "the real deal" wide tyres with 50mm whitewalls ( in 14") is gunna cost $250 a tyre as opposed to $126 for a set of flappers. Most of the guys that use come around and carve the side out of your tyre and then apply white paint hahve( oops theres another typo) been outlawed. and i can understand why. I have heard all the arguements for and agin "flappers"... they eat the side of your radials. etc. I had no trouble with em on Eddy the EK Yoot . It all comes down to is running the right size tyre for the rim. Run too wide a tyre and you will chew the sidewalls out with your portawalls. Run too narrow a tyre and the flappers will.... well...... ........ "Flap" Reddo... vintage caravans, vintage caravans, vint...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
