Hi There Fellow V V's Just want to put the word out we are looking for a Holden (must be auto) 50's era naturally ;D it can also be a ute or station wagon, not just sedan. Doesnt matter which. Im looking to buy it around Feb next year after i sell my car OR swap now for my car which is a daihatsu sirion 98' auto 75,000k's electric mirrors/windows, aircon, airbags ect. If anyone can help, please PM me. The Holden will be a tow car for our sunny. Shock horror at mentioning a modern car in here but its worth a shot...you never know Cheers LuLu

Hi Lulu
Eddy is yours for $10,000 ;D Its a manual but can be converted to a later model HQ to WB tri-matic auto. They will bolt up to the back of the red 186 six cylinder motor and are far better than the old clunker autos. Would need to modify the transmission hump in the floor to make it fit.

Col Thats some really good advice there thanks heaps. Im a HUGE fan of the Holdens but at the same time im hoping i find one thats been restored and changed to an auto, not factory auto/hydramatic. Im glad you mentioned the hydramatic as Dad always warned me about them but i thought he was just being dramatic...lol He had an EK when i was little, i still remember the coral colour and how much i loved it and i was only 5yrs old. He then had a xp which i liked too, had that till i was 12 then he lost my respect when he traded that in for a 80's fairmont ghia! He thinks im mad for wanting to sell my perfectly reliable sirion for a classic car. As i said to him i was born in the wrong era and dont rub it in that he's lived it and i havent..hehe. Basically It doesnt have to be completely original, all i ask is it has a newer motor & mostly original just on the inside (bench seats ect). Would be nice if it still had the original features inside but just changed mechanically. There was my all time fav Holden (fj) recently that had this done. Its now been taken off so it must be sold. Theres a couple on ebay at the moment that i like. One is a 1957 Holden fc special sedan and the other is a white fx but both still not as good as the fj i saw *sigh*. Probably should stop torturing myself by looking as i still have my car to sell yet...lol Reddo Just love Eddy, always have *sigh* if it was an auto for that price, youd have me on your doorstep

Hi Lulu,
You may find something you are looking for in Unique Cars, E Bay Carsguide or even some car club mags as they can also offer a members car for sale that may suit the bill. As for auto tranny's, keep right away from the hydramatic as they are a P.O.S no good for towing ( horrible things ) and a later upgrade to the Trimatic or traumatic as they are known as which will give you more flexibility towing. Also get a tranny cooler fitted to prolong the life of it as well. regards Bruce

Hydramatics used to be called Highly Dramatics when I was in the Auto trade years ago!!.It was a Drama just getting one to work properly.
Trimatics used to be called Traumatics. It was considered a Trauma owning one!!
But Traumatics are a better auto box than the Highly Dramatic ones and unlike Highly Dramatics the parts to repair if needed are mostly still available.

Mrfj..Maurie Hi and WOW about the 'all Holden day' Please tell me they have these swaps more than once a year? Maybe in Feb 08 there might be one, when im cashed up. There is know way i could just go for a look see, that would kill me I know what im like, ive been to car shows and end up having the poo's for weeks afterwards cause i dont have one..hehe So this is the plan, sell the sirion in late jan, put that with my little bit (1g so far) i have saved, then start looking in the mags, net and go to one of these all holden days where im pretty sure even little fussy me would find "the one" ;D Your fj sounds perfect...wanna swap? Found the man & vv of my dreams, now just have to get the car to match I adore your fj & if you hear of someone with one similar wanting to upgrade to a modern car, please let me know. Thanks so much for your invite, its very sweet & VERY tempting. Have a great time!!!! hknut..Bruce Thanks for the tips! Car club mags & tranny cooler..good one, im learning heaps from this thread from you & everyone..so THANKYOU! Even if i dont find a car from someone in here (or one of their friends) its great as you all own these cars and can tell me the good, the bad and the ugly. Not much ugly though, i mean we are talking about Holdens ;D Reddo Dont you hate that damn decimal point disorder? The cure is exclamation education...like so....!!!!!!! humpty Nahhh dont worry, its all good. Disc brakes are way over-rated fbmad Hey who would have thought a traumatic experience could be a positive thing kaybee....lol

Good luck with the car hunt (and selling) Lulu. If you haven't already, try the Sirion on that 'carsales' website (no free plugs here!) I think they do $9.95 at present. HKnut has it spot on about trimatics - I have always referred to them as Traumatics. I owned two (yes shock horror I have owned holdens- both of them V8s though) and both pooped the trannies. Tell tale signs of worn traumatics are slipping between gears and an easy check is if there is a delay in selecting reverse (esp when cold). By delay I mean exactly that if it don't go into reverse when you select it be wary, unless you know a nice mechanic, Trimatics are reasonably cheap, but paying a mechanic to change one over isn't. Cheers, Gristy

Gristy Ok slipping between gears and delay in reverse, got it, great, more good info there, thankyou I know what you mean about changing to auto is pricey. Recently i had the most georgeous morry(which Reddo bought..then sold after newcastle flood) she was a beauty! Reddo did a post about it a couple of months back..Weddo Wed Wocket it was called. The plan then was to keep the morry and change it over to auto. I was told by my friends Dad(who was a mechanic), plus my Dad it would cost me a min. 2g's to do so. So i went to my new mechanic (the other ones in town didnt want the job, too much labour) and enquired about it. He told me around the 2g mark too, which was fine, but thats if nothing else goes wrong or needs extra and he wouldnt know till he was doing the work if it was going to be more. A lot involved, labour wise mostly. He basically said i can take the risk, but i didnt want to because it might have cost me more than what i would have got for selling the sirion, then id be screwed. So i weighed everything up and as the the morry didnt fit my new work gear in it, i really needed a bigger car for that stuff & one that will tow our sunny & room in backseat for 2dogs when we go away. Unfortunately it just wasnt a suitable car to have anymore for a few reasons. Whoever has the morry now, congrats and i still have the spare keys but you cant have them because my parrots claimed them The Holdens have always been my fav, but to be honest if its any 50's car thats been changed to auto, good condition & ok for the things ive mentioned then i'll be happy with anything IF no luck with a Holden. I Like the vals, s series push button auto for eg. my friend from tech years ago had one. The bat mobile she called it. That was one funky car! Anyway raving on here, i should save it for our fruit man whos into the classics. We got talking about cars after he saw the sunny. Hes after his dream car at the moment too. A Ford Customline Pre 59' or something like that. Im trying to convert him to Holdens but he threatens to increase the fruit prices on me, cheeky bugger. Bye for now and thanks again for those tips. Good Stuff!

What about a Powerglide? This is what the HD has and if you're prepared to change from high to low when you go up or down hills it's a really good box in my opinion and it hasn't given me any problems in the five years I've owned the car. Not too sure if you could put one behind a grey motor or if you'd want to, because the HD with a 179 is a very slow car (might just be me). I wasn't around when these cars were new so I'm not sure how popular they were or if there were any major issues with them but someone on this site will probably know.

Hi Lulu
I am glad i did buy the morris off you. I have saved you a lot of heartache. If you had gone ahead and fitted the morris with an auto ( or even left it as a manual) the towcar weight to van weight would have prohibited yoiu from towing the sunny with it. I bought it with the intention of towing the teardrop with it. I would have never considered towing a full sized van with something as light as the Morris.
Your mechanic mentioned something like "Other unforeseen problems. I had a good look at the wiring on the morris and i estimate at least 2 or 3 days work for an auto electrician to sort things out up behind the dash. There was a lot of loose ends up there and it wasnt something that i felt like delving into. Getting too old to be hanging upsidedown under a dash like a fruit bat for 2 or 3 days.
Not rubbishing the car,it was a fun thing to drive. Just wasnt the same after the floods and the thought of the electrics being dampened up to the headlights was the contributing factor in its resale.

Im with you Todd, my Powerglide is a trouble free unit and given no trouble over the 38 years of its life. They were built for big 8's and are used in plenty of drag cars so it may be the pick out of the Highly Dramatics & Traumatics!! And if they're behind a Holden 6 then they should last until the cows come home Cheers J-Rod

HD, jrod & kaybee A Powerglide hey? Sounds pretty good to me Reddo I knew it..that flood, the morry, the damage *sigh* i completely understand, no worries here. Silly me just got a little attached to the damn thing, being my first classic and all. Youre right, she was a fun car (AFC was the numberplate)..lol but in the long run it was better off with someone that didnt need it for a tow car for a medium size van. Would have been great for the TD if the flood hadnt of happened. Hows the pool looking now? Not still like the yarra river i hope. fbmad Have PM'd you back today
